Always check freight where you would land at BEFORE taking a load.spyder7723 Thanks this.

I'm new and what I will say to add my two cents is look for consistent lanes, customers. Had I not needed to head home to get the truck worked on I'd be running a variation of a triangle all 3 points over $2 mile. Looking at the board I see a load I took last week posted for next week so watch for that.i haven't been here long enough to really agree with either side of the convo but at the end of the day it's the trucking industry and the megas aren't gonna stop cutting rates. I'm deadheading now to Ohio 534 miles because I refuse to take a load to south Florida for 1.49 mile and 4ft tarp

We are all saying the same things, it's just that people have different perspectives!
Mercer is a great place to be if the rates match what you're looking for!
I stated we are limited to what's on the board, whether being cheap or no loads, some people argue against that point. But you may or may not have picked up on the fact that the person that argued with me the most, dead headed from CA to TX, because in his words, "I didn't want to spend a month out west or pull stupid cheap freight". See he was limited to choices of "cheap" freight, regardless of whether or not he was paid well enough going in!
When a couple of us said "cheap", we were bashing Mercer apparently, or didn't know how to run, but my cheap, his cheap, your cheap, is probably all different. Some people are happy with $1.43, that's evident on here, and by the way $1.40ish loads disappear off the board! Now I would never run my truck for $1.43, but there isn't a shortage of guys willing to. -
There's no such thing as cheap freight, a load one guy might find cheap might get the next guy home, or through a city he has family in
-
Well I think he was considering all miles at 1.43 not pulling 1.43 cent loads. That included his deadhead. He said it was his first month and made some mistakes. That being Said I think good anything is relative to your opinion and experience.

Yea D/H is the worst part of mine id say it was 50/50 loaded and DH. WAY to much. i'm running under a new system to myself IDC if im empty or not i need to make so much money. My bottom dollar is 1.35? Thats paying myself .45 cents a mile but i like to get higher loads.

I probably should have used a generic number, I wasn't trying to single a individual out, my bad!
-
Looks to me this thread is a mirror of conditions at Mercer.kjoseph Thanks this.
-
Sure there is! It's called hauling for less than your expenses. Everyone has a break even point, lets say it's $1.00. If you put freight on your truck for $0.50, you are now in the red. You now have to haul freight at 50% higher than your break even point to overcome that red! If you continue to do that then your only breaking even! Why go into business at that point?kjoseph and TaylorMade407 Thank this.
