No doubt about it, states with no state income taxes are very nice. There are places in the U.S.A. that also have municipal income taxes. I believe that New York City is one of them.

Seven states have no state income taxes:
    1) Alaska
    2) Florida
    3) Nevada
    4) South Dakota
    5) Texas
    6) Washington
    7) Wyoming.

Two others, New Hampshire and Tennessee, tax only dividend and interest income.

Ironically, six of the nine states listed above are also right-to-work states:
    1) Florida
    2) Nevada
    3) South Dakota
    4) Tennessee
    5) Texas
    6) Wyoming

Yea. I moved from Texas to MI (Don't ask why please. :) and in reality for the people living there there is little difference. MI has state income tax yes, but a lot lower sales tax so it basically evens out. No, the annoying thing for me is like you mentioned of cities having a income tax. The company I'm with is about to move to such a city and now I'll have to deal with all the extra paperwork of filing taxes for the city over a lousy 0.5% income tax. Grr....

But there still is Federal taxation, and one must have a tax address even per the Feds, else your truck is your home and you cannot claim daily per diem deduction for meals. Whether you are actually there most of the time has nothing to do with it. It has to be the address in which you claim for taxation purposes, and it has to be a legitimate residential address. It can't be a vacant lot on the edge of town. And the CDL regulations require a physical residence address as well. I am pretty sure that this is the reasoning that the OP was wondering why the state could check up on him.

My question would be, what did the OP do or say than caused anyone to even decide to check up on him? There are many situations in dealing with officials, regardless of state or federal, when one usually should just keep their mouth shut.

it's just better to just provide them with whatever documentation showing where you live, (a mailing address) and leaving it at that. No one is telling you where to sleep, but they are going to need to know where you are getting your mail( like your paycheck).
