Pulling Doubles In the City

    Hey LTL guys, I have a question,

    How often do you Pick Up and Delivery Guys go out into the city with doubles? Meaning like maybe the trailer behind the tractor is loaded with stops to do and then the tag trailer (GFS talk for second trailer in the set) is full or empty which ever and you go to a factory or major warehouse and break the set apart park the converter dolly and then park the trailer to and go on you're way and do you're thing and swing by said customer at the end of the day and pick up the loaded or unloaded trailer.

    The reason I asked is because the company I work for we run a very large interstate doubles operation for a broad line food service company we probably have the biggest presence of doubles out on the road. Any how I got to my last stop today and one of the people at my stop asked me if we pulled doubles, because he could see all of our 28' have pintel hooks on them. I said "Yes they run doubles at night to the warehouse. It's not a bad job to have, it's not my current bid, but eventually I would do it if the opportunity came up."

    I said as far as us running doubles in the city I'm not saying it's never not happened, but I have never known of it to happen. Once in a while we do drop full trailers of food off at customers, but usually when that happens the trailer gets dropped at our yard and then taken as a single to where it has to go, I've never known of GFS to have someone pull a set out to a customer break down park the converter in the customers parking lot and then go run a route. I think usually because our customer base is a little different then a big factory that ships out stuff by truck and train every day us pulling doubles in the city is not totally practical. However I think it's different for you freight guys right?

    Quite often with my former and new employer. Take a regular and a liftgate pup out, break em up, the non lift gate trailer will be a bulk stop, and the lift gate will have all the one'z two'z stops in it.

    Do your deliveries, some pick ups, hook your set and roll back to the yard.

    I rarely take a set through an area outside of my route. Usually my route takes me from the terminal to the drop lot (large truck stop or a Home Depot) where I will drop one or two trailers.

    We do have customers where you can pull a set into to do a quick pickup without breaking. Some of my coworkers even got so good that they will back a set into a dock for a pickup. It is rare but it does happen.

    For me personally, I will plan all my pickups and drops way ahead of time to prevent the hassle of doing it with a set or triples. My homestretch route out of town is also something I have planned ahead of time. You can not physically make certain turns.

    I'm not the worlds greatest backer (there I said it) I mean I can do what I need to do and make it work, but backing a set of doubles into a loading dock I defiantly couldn't do that ha-ha!

    In my opinion, backing doubles is more for bragging rights than any useful real world application. It might be handy once in a while, but not enough to justify the effort of getting good at it.

    Unless you absolutely have to back out of a situation. Plenty of times where I encountered an impassable road or some moron decided to park his truck in the fuel lane to take a shower.

    Being able to back 30 feet can be very helpful under certain circumstances

    One area where I have seen guys back sets, is in fuel hauling. Not often, and not too far, but it does happen from time to time.
    I've never hauled fuel, nor had any desire to, but when I look at some of these older gas stops, I have to just SMH and think, "Now THAT would be a PITA to get to, to deliver fuel."
