I'm new here and looking for some answers and you guys seem to know quite a bit about this. My truck has been in and out of the shop constantly over this DPF system. It started losing power and I took into the shop and got the filter clean ...my mechanic didnt do the baking on the filter. He just air pressure cleaned it. It seemed to have worked well for about a month but now its back in the shop and he's saying that its not getting enough of the def fluid to the filter. White smoke now comes out of the filter and gets into the cabin and I almost passed out from the fumes before taking it in.
Before taking it in my truck never asks to be regenerated except for once. Is there a way to force it to regeneration on my truck? How often should my truck be asking to be regeneration.
Do you guys have any suggestions here. Should I just take it to the dealer to get baked? He's changed all kinds of sensors and nothing is working. Could it be an injector as some of you guys mentioned here?
I'm the Los Angeles area. Anyone recommend a mechanic thats a expert on these. Let me know if you guys need any more info from me as well.

One thing I like about the new forum is the Alerts feature-- I had commented on this thread a few years ago and it lets me know the thread is active again-- cool.
Just wanted to say in April 2012 we put in a new DPF filter, EGR cooler and 7th injector. June 2014 new 7th injector which cleared the CEL for a few months. Put it back in shop they they thought it needed a new EGR Valve. Couple more months of no CEL. Then it would not do a parked regen (back in 2012 the guys told me to try to run a parked regen every night after a hard day of driving-- if it doesn't do it, it doesn't need it) in fact would make an ungodly noise from the turbo. I kept running load after load, checking with shop after shop and every shop said several days to even look at it. Just kept running - the plan was to keep going til she would not go no mo lol.
Anyway finally put her in the shop when she would not go, about 300,000 miles on the DPF filter, they were able to bake it clean and found a broken exhaust manifold bolt which was the cause of the terrible noise near the turbo.
I hope this info helps someone. A lot of times I didn't want to run the parked regen next to my neighbors due to the noise but at a certain point their discomfort is not worth $5000 for the risk of not doing it. -

To add to this, Volvos with SCR systems don't do on road regens. They designed the engine to reduce the EGR cycle to the minimum while running. Higher NOX levels in the exhaust help oxidize the soot in the DPF at lower temperatures. Therefore they were able to eliminate on road regens using the 7th injector. The NOX is then taken care of in the SCR system. The 7th injector is still present for parked regens if needed. The Volvo engines will kick themselves into an automatic parked regeneration when needed while idling.
The Volvo engines will sometimes alert to the SCR system not performing properly and will ask for a parked regeneration to avoid having the system derate to 5mph. The DPF will often not be full. This is due to the NOX sensors showing low SCR performance, most of the time due to crystallization of the DEF inside the catalyst. This is usually during cold weather. Running a parked regeneration in this situation is called a DEF crystal sublimation cycle because the high temperatures created by a parked regeneration will cause the crystallized DEF to vaporize and restore the effectiveness of the SCR system.
And contrary to popular belief, high rpms don't help passive regeneration. My Volvo is an XE package and runs at 1200 rpm at 67 mph. The DPF stays pretty clean because low rpms make the exhaust temperature higher, helping boost oxidation of the soot by the NOX.Truckermania and Pmracing Thank this. -

I have a 2009 prostar and it won't do a parked regen, or a regen while driving.... I have to go to a mechanic to get it forced. He hooks his computer up to my truck and does it that way. When I ask him what do I need...? He never gives me a clear answer.... he says something like.... "You need to replace something inside your truck... under the hood...
