Are you asking about forced teaming two students or just going out with a trainer? All companies are required I believe to send you out with a trainer for 4-6 weeks to make sure you know how to drive. (An insurance requirement.) Even if you have driven for 20 years before and then stopped for awhile you would still need to go out with someone for a month.

I am asking about a new cdl grad who goes out with a trainer (4 weeks lets say). It looks like some companies have them team drive, and some companies have their trainers sit in the right seat and just train. I am wondering which companies do not team drive during training of new CDLs before they get their own truck.Last edited: Nov 2, 2015

Magnum out Fargo is one that comes to mind.

knight USED to do htat, trainer is in the pass seat while trainee drives. not sure if it still like that

At Maverick you will do all the driving while the trainer is in the jump seat. The truck is operated as if you are a solo driver.

Watkins-Shepard - 10 days with trainer
TransAm - 12 days with trainer -
Schneider, both van and bulk. I was a trainer there and team driving was a strict no go.

Last time I checked, Crete does not team during training. They can "super solo", where the truck is allowed 10 or 20 more hours a week, but not anywhere close to two full 70 hour clocks. Man, their trainers and students always seemed so much more relaxed when I would be in the Crete terminals. Worked for one of the sister companies, so not sure how accurate that is.
Crete is also a very high paying company with very nice workers, and generally very competent. I sent a student over there after he got his year, and he has thanked me a few times.Mike2633 and Wild Murphy Thank this. -
Hogan (St. Louis, MO) does not team drive. A newly hatched CDL holder will be in a truck for no less than 4 weeks. Depending on progress and weather conditions, the student will be behind the wheel for nearly 100% of the time. The trainer MAY utilize any available drive time left in their day but may not be off-duty while the trainee is responsible for the CMV, which is helpful if you are trying to shorten the Friday morning drive home by extending Thursday night's travel.
SHOJim Thanks this.
