I have looked at DBL jobs, but I'm not close enough to anything currently open. Carlisle is hiring, but Keasbey isn't. Keasbey is also too far of a daily commute for anything resembling a first-shift job; I'd be in the car two hours each way with traffic. It's not that driving is or isn't my main interest; making money is the main interest, such that my wife can stay home. You can't find that in hotels, at least not in hotel operations, which is the last 12 years of my life.

The first interview I went on since this thread was born has said that we are too far apart on money...but he does want me, so he's working on meeting my number. The second interview was kind enough to send me a paper reject letter which arrived today. The personality profiler at the Delaware unemployment meeting nailed me as a hotel industry person; it even suggested a job title that I'd previously held and was very happy with before I had a wife and kids. Only problem with that is that I feel burned out on hotels (there's the screen name and avatar reference - sticking a pitchfork in a pineapple)...I cringe at the thought of "May I help you?"

What about a state trooper? In Jersey, I think you need a degree to become one or I'm thinking of something else.

You need 60 credits to be considered for NJSP. My total earned credit load across all three degrees is something like 150. I've also been to boot camp once already; no desire to repeat it at an age where I'm likely to say what I'm really thinking.

I know that's right. Can't tell you how many times I wanted to laugh in my drill instructors face or spit in it. What about UPS? That can be rewarding but also could take time unless you find a loop hole into the works

I walked in to S&S in Bellmawr yesterday and there were maybe six people in the yard. There was one in the classroom and it was his first day. The instructor teaching him took time to talk to me. Not sure what it looks like there on a weekday, but was planning to go back tomorrow.

I have an interview at a hotel this afternoon, but they already told me what they can pay me, and their number doesn't get it done. I'm pretty much only going on the interview because I worked with the guy in Atlantic City when I first started out.

First post after some motivated lurking...I read several long threads in their entirety: much thanks to @freightwipper and @softail and @warhippy for their insights. Here's my situation/question(s):

I'm a career changer. 12 years in the hospitality industry (hotel operations - Front Desk, etc.) and I really think I'm done. I don't see a future in it that enables mine and my family's goals. I am initially attracted to Schneider because they are insanely close to my home: the Paulsboro, NJ facilities are about 4 miles from my front door. Tanker driving out of that location would be ideal, and SNI is looking for OTR and non-OTR to originate there. The worst advertised salary I've seen in searching SNI job listings is better than I ever did while running a hotel, and I'm thinking I can come out of school with tanker and HazMat.

I'm also prior USAF and have experience with small tractors, small trailers/doubles, and forklifts up to 10K. I was an AMMO troop and I loved hauling bombs and missiles to the flightline. Same theory but smaller scale and different skill set as CDL-A, but it's something.

All that being said:

1. I'm tall and heavy - 6'3"/350. Is there anything I should look out for on the medical side before I go any further in exploring this move?

2. Do taller people have a hard time in a sleeper?

3. Where is Schneider tanker training? I've done lots of reading and been unable to find a location.

4. Does anyone here run to/from Paulsboro at all? What kind of freight, what kind of work, etc.?

Thanks for the help, y'all. I've almost got my head around the idea of leaving a career field that I love, so I'm all ears to anything the community thinks would be helpful.

If you love the career you are in why would you want to be a trucker? The perception is not the reality. Since you have admitted a weight problem, let me tell you truckers are some if the most unhealthy people on earth. If I were you I would stay on your current career path.
