I use IB Talk from Asia. Use a stateside phone number but I'm actually calling from China. Can call my sister in Tennessee and talk as long as I want and it's free because the number I use has the same area code.
Google and you can learn how to get hooked up with IB Talk.

There's something like 6 1/2 million American expats living overseas. Nothing wrong with that. Some people aren't content with being status quo retired. Those with meager pensions can live like kings in some countries and not have to count their pennies to get by month to month. It's nice to go grocery shopping and not have to use a calculator to keep from overspending.
There's something like 200,000 or so of us living in China and splitting time in the USA. It's not like the lying politicians say it is or we wouldn't spend time here and buy homes here. That goes for Thailand, Philippines and other Asian countries too. For those with a spirit of adventure, it's a great life.

That it is. What I get in the Philippines for my money. Carton of Marlboros for $12.00 and the tobacco is grown there. The number of expats in the Philippines is unreal and with opening Subic again, and not just expats from the states but also Australia and Germany. More bang for the buck. Also like Chinatown said, it is not what the politicians say. I have talked to people that have come back from a tour to china or Thailand or the Philippines and the stories that they tell me and then tell me that can not wait until can go back again

And not expensive to fly over. Right now looking at my next flight back in April, r/t from LAX to manila, $700. My 5 star hotel, $70/night. I know just here at Swift many drivers that have ladies in China and Philippines and they fly back and forth all the time

There's a Social Security Office in Manila, Philippines; easy to solve issues with that for expats.

I live part time in Lima.
The dollar is strong, really strong there. I am able to use my purchasing power 3.23 soles to 1 dollar to live well, really well. Dinner for 6? $57 dollars, and thats steak, drinks, all of it.

You can get Peruvian cotton factory made shirts that have extremely minor imperfections for $3 dollars each. Brands like Lacoste, Boss, etc

I can get a finely crafted ####tail (a pisco sour) for $3 bucks. In NYC you pay $12

I can get an apartment, 2 br, in a High rise in Lima for $400 a month. In NYC $400 covers your parking spot.

I can Hop down to Patagonia Chile and explore possibly the worlds best mountain ranges. I can hop to Colombia and witness the worlds most beautiful women and live life like a playboy bachelor that makes many of my male friends jealous.

yes I love America, but its not the center of the universe like Americans think it is.

You guys have me thinking of moving out of country too. Been looking at info on Belize and Brazil, looks like if the retiree is absent for x amount of months, nationals can take over your property there. Was doing other research about Guam and American Somoa, not too sure about those places either. Never been to Philippines or Thailand, but did a year on Okinawa Japan. Some of the marines who had been to those places came back with wicked stories though lol. One of our marines just decided he wasn't coming back from the Philippines and the shore patrol arrested him and sent him back to Okinawa, some time in the brig and demoted to private, he said it was worth it and he'd do it again if he had the chance.
