You can take the standard per diem or keep all receipts and write the cost off. I usually just take the per diem. It is easier than keeping all the receipts.
-
Per diem is now 63$ a day so if you dont spend more than that your better off to take the standard deduction.... Doubt many spend that much unless you get a room every night or steak and lobster twice a day.
-
per diem rate is for food and incidentals. lodging is separate and is fully deductible.Junkyarddog5958 Thanks this.
-
And it is 80% of $59 for any day away from home thru Sept, then 80% of $63 for days away from home starting Oct 1st.
-
That is perdiem for non-HOS taxpayers, people who are subject to HOS regulations have their own deduction.
-
Yeah i knew that, i was tired... forgot about the few times i got a room.
-
Can you clarify the difference between the per diem and standard please?
-
Per diem is payed directly to you daily, bringing your yearly wages lower, and company doesnt pay social security taxes.
When you retire, you've paid in less,so your ss check is reduced.
The standard deduction 47.20 and $50.40,can be deducted, every day your out,at the end of the year.
Say your out 300 days, use the $50,as your deduction, you would subtract $15,000 from your wages, and only pay tax,on the balance.
If you made $50,000,you would only pay tax on $35,000.
Full amount would be paid into your social security account. -
Keep good records. Your tax guy, TurboTax, and the IRS will be much happier.
