I am working with a company with 40 trucks, very high OT hours. GM proposed hiring two extra drivers to rotate in and cover for absent drivers and also reduce OT hours by rotating drivers off. Started doing random rotations. Now developing a schedule so drivers have advance notice, all seems good until both drivers scheduled off are not available and have a driver call in sick. A truck is sitting without a driver. How are absent drivers covered in your experience?

They're not where I work. The next shift will have to do the loads. I try not to get too worked up. Every driving job I've had will run you 14 hours a day if you let them. I try to just tell them the truth. I have a life that doesn't involve spending every waking second driving. Either they understand and reduce my hours or I get another job.

Most union jobs have this sort of system. New hirees start off either as a casual, on call, vacation relief, or floater. Over at the post office, everybody starts off as a PSE (Postal Support Employee). They have no set schedule, and have to work any shift as needed.

Temp agencies can be useful......especially if it is a short term problem. If it's long term, like Juan said, start off as casual / on call for 90 days

Back in the pop days, we only had 1 or 2 backup drivers. If somehow a route couldn't get cover, the boss man take it. Or it sit for the next day

We have 12 routes, 14 drivers. I was #12 until a warehouse guy that has 18 yrs w the company got his CDL recently. Now I'm #13, and he's #4 and no driving exp.,(yea it's Union ) . Driver # 14 drives like once a month, i drive almost every day , pretty much because of luck. One driver is injured right now . My company has "N" days , which are rotating days off for drivers. They barely use them. Instead , they throw us low drivers in the warehouse . So one day I start at 3, and if I'm in the warehouse the next day I start at 8.

We usually have 2-3 people on call at all times for runs that need covered. I'm on call for 8 hours on Saturdays as part of my run. Most of the time they don't call though, so I usually just get 8 hours of pay for sitting at home.
