What do you have to defend yourself?

Sig P938 in my front pocket, it is my American Express. I never leave home without it.
Also usually have 1 of my 1911's beside the seat. ####ed and locked.

 

I've got a small knife and a rubber mallet that I use for the job, but I suppose they could be used for self defense. When I'm not at a terminal, I always sleep at Pilot/FJ or Love's. The only problems I have run into are arguments when a driver claims I scratched his truck (scam) or when someone takes their 30 minute break in the fuel lane and I ask them to move so I can get fuel.

 

I'm local and deliver all over the city at night. Most the times the station is lite up with a lot of lights but we do have a few that are daytime only for the truck to go there. That's the way the company can protect you. So I recommend that if you go into a drop site and it's dangerous just locking at it talk with the supervisor. Keep you head on a spin and watch everywhere of your zone. I must say that I haul gasoline so I nee to watch what is used around me. I DO NOT recommend that you carry a weapon. It can give you great protection if you're trained properly
but it might cause you more headaches you'd ever what. It's out with me just for the fact there's gasoline vapors all around and I would rather meet the man upstairs looking good over looking like you just took me off the BB'Q.

The best weapon you'll ever have is you brain. Be sharp and aware. Don't cause any attention to yourself and you'll know better what to do as time goes on. Talk with the other drivers that may have been to that site. It never hurts to ask and if it does run for the hills because that type of drivers are dangerous and a company that would hire them are worse. And last when checking your tires with your 2 pound ball-peen hammer. Get it !!!! hammer? checking ?? Be safe and good luck.

 

Used to carry when I was a field inspector and marketing photographer in Clark county NV. Only ever left the holster twice, both times when I came across a hallway mirror (you get really high-strung doing that job.) I know where every rotten corner of that entire county is. The rest I talked down without question, or burned a hole in them with a death stare. Every other problem, I sat back and let the police smoke them out.

Fun fact, Vegas Metro mostly goes in tazers drawn. North Vegas police, always drew thier sidearms.

But now,, aside from a ball pene hammer, 2 3D flash lights , a tire bat and a death stare ,I think that 40 ton Tractor Trailer is probably the best self defense tool.

Or a kick to the shin, and a good throat punch ,whatever.

 

First off, if you are timid, this is NOT the job for you. Knives and guns. Yes they have their places. BUT you had best know what you are doing with them, or you may find them taken away from you, and used against you.
You'd also better be up on the weapons laws where you go.
I always carried. In fact I still do, even though I'm retired now. But I'm retired law, and have the necessary licenses to do so. However, when I was trucking the option of national carry was not an option. I carried anyway, figuring I'd rather be tried by 12 etc etc etc.
There is much good advice in this thread. Mainly, keep you eyes open, be aware of what is around you, and above all USE COMMON SENSE.

I've been out here for over 5 years now.

The only thing I need to defend myself against is the rare lot lizard.
I say 'no thanks', and I am again free from problems.

I take one of my daughters with me every summer break. Even they have had no problems, even when venturing out on their own in a truck stop.

Maybe we have been lucky.
Or, maybe, things are not so bad as you imagine?

My rifle and my sword are at home - where I will be going if things in this country get really ugly.

Don't live life being afraid.
For the moment, things are not that bad.

Ah yes, California, where there is a law against everything. But serious stuff is usually not punished seriously.
