I knew Wal-Mart is closing some of the stores but didn't know so many other retail stores were closing.it might affect the industry some like Werner because Wal-Mart is their biggest customer but I don't think it's going to have a huge impact.Carriers that have a contract with these stores is probably bidding on future contracts with other clients.

For the most part, loosing these mall and box stores are the way of the times. Good riddance to them. You can only milk the system for so long, before the chinese manufactures and the consumer decide to cut out the middle man and go online.

Overall, it is a net boom for the economy. These stores paid crap and relied on the mega-crap trucking companies to deliver their cheep chinese crap for cheep wages. Mega-crap truckings major customer by far is these very same retail box stores. Mega-crap can fall off the face of the earth for all I care. They pay drivers crap, treat them like crap, and make the roads unsafe for all of us.

The freight isn't going to disappear. We are still going to have our chinese junk. It is now just delivered at cheaper price by UPS, Fed Ex, and the USPS. All these companies pay better, treat their workers better, and are safer to be on the road with.

I hear people say refer side doesnt slow because everyone needs food. If you look in a walmart or any supermarket there are a lot more isles of dry food that people need vs refrigerated or frozen.
And not only food but all the toiletries and soaps everyone still buys when the economy slows.

Furniture is still strong. We're opening new stores, building DC's and hiring drivers and still have more work than we can do and having to still rely on outside carriers to pick up the slack.

Outside backhauls are still strong as well although the rates are down some.

When the economy falters we're usually the first to see it since furniture is a discretionary expense not a necessity. We had 14% overall sales growth last year and the company is optimistic on growth into next year.

I'm playing wait and see for the fall to see if projections hold up but for now we've seen no decline and my miles / loads moved / income so far are up 4% over this period last year.

There's a reason all these brick and mortar stores are dissapearing and that's online retailers, and that still requires a truck.

Maybe van freight. So long as people are building buildings or equipment, flat deck will always be in demand.
