1st year fell into that dedicated, so 5.5 days out, 1.5 days off for most of the year.

This year, much more relaxed, out 4-10 days home 3-7 days.

Correct - we set the stage for this financially and could probably skip by with me working 6-7 months.

Not just Mercer - I've caught on to the lazy bug at LS too. I've talked to guys that were running those frames that have barely turned the wheels this year.

At the end of the year if I worked more than 5.00 days per 7 that is too much. 2014 was something like 5.07. 2015 was down to 3.5 or something, don't have the numbers in front of me at the moment. Any day with any on duty time is a day considered worked. Conversely, a full midnight to midnight period when I'm not at home isn't considered a day worked. I draw 75k from this business. I work hard when the money is flowing then when it slows I go home and relax. Example. I worked from Jan. 4 to about mid March and made a good lump sum. Then it slowed for me and I was off until early May. No big deal to me. My business expenses for the month are 1700+ however many repairs. My personal life expenses are about 1300 per month + food. Food isn't high for me when I'm at home because I cook most of my own meals. Life is good right now. But I know the day is coming when it will be decision time for a new motor or a new truck or how to proceed from there. But that's another discussion.

There are many similarities with the two companies. What can be done at one can be done at the other more or less. It's all about finding your rut ;)

I believe it's a combination of pulling good paying freight and living a comfortable life as opposed to trying to live high and mighty.
When i was in my early twenties i made twice as much as i make today, but all i had to show for it was expensive toys, fancy clothes, and expensive vacations. I had 3 Armani suits and the only place i wore them to was the the night club. I spent a ton of money to impress people that today i haven't even spoken to in ten years. Man i wish i could reach back in time and slap some sense into that dumb kid.

A lot more similarities than differences. We both have guys that make good money easily and other guys that can't figure out how to keep the lights on at home.

The biggest thing that guys with good home time have in common is percentage pay. If the only way to make a good check is to run more miles, you are only digging a hole.

What?... Do you guys mean to say that third grade math and a plan can create.... I dare not say it... Success !!!
So if we choose to live as close to debt free as possible and maybe haul loads for money( flatbed, tanks) instead of miles, we could work less and have more profit?.... This can't be.
And the sin of all sins, a brand new truck and profits?... I think I'm going to need a stiff drink and a day off to let all this outside the box thinking sink in!!
