I have a question for you experienced drivers or recent cdl graduates who have landed a job.I have 2-6 month gaps of employment as well as maybe 4 or 5 jobs in the last 3 years. I'm filling out applications and I have to account for gaps between these jobs. I'm also worried in orientation about a 4-5 year gap of employment I have where I was working as a barber. I can't verify this job and it was off the books so to speak. How would you guys handle this and how will it effect my chances with the big boys and medium sized to small companies. I'm still in school but will be testing out to get my CDL this tuesday coming up. I have some local companies I really want to get on with but I don't know whether to wait to apply to those until after I passed the test or not. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Most companies want last 3 yrs. accounted for unless you were a commercial driver. Just be honest, during those gaps you were unemployed and doing handyman work around the neighborhood. Just be honest about the barber work.
Some companies won't hire you, but many will.
Apply with Abilene Motor Express; seems like one of the more reasonable companies around.

Thanks a lot, would you apply before passing the cdl test or wait until you actually have the license to apply to smaller companies?

We're you living alone or with family during your periods of unemployment? If with family, just have them write/sign a letter saying they were supporting you. I had to sign one like this a few years ago for my girlfriend.

I'd apply now. Many large or medium companies are good also. Don't get hung up on the small companies exclusively.

Just don't tell anyone that you were in a boot camp in Syria.

Write up a brief explanation about each gap. Companies, in my experience, are worried you were in jail. I spent 6 months before my current long-term job resting from OTR, spending my savings, and researching/trying to start an internet biz, when the internet was pretty new to consumers. I simply wrote a paragraph or two explaining what I was doing and verifying my residence was consistent during the gaps.

Mostly they just need any reasonable explanation. Keep it brief. Think back, maybe you were volunteering or trying to help family, or fixing up your or friends/family's property. The key seems to be "occupied" "legal" and just coincidentally unpaid.

Or that you roamed around the African continent with Wooly Rhino and you both had the same BFF, Mike Hoare. By the way, Wooly Rhino, your friend Mike didn't answer my inquiry about working for him; probably worked out for the best. A bunch of us signed up back in the 1980's while he was in prison but didn't get a notice to work.

I had multiple unemployment gaps on applications. All the megas wanted me, along with a few medium sized companies for their CDL training. I would not worry about it all that much. JPT asked how I had money and what I was doing, I said " I had money saved and was trying to find an ideal job"
    Good luck.
