When I first started with my own authority I hauled a van trailer, less cargo liability than reefer and very straight forward, depending on the area your in there are some very well paying loads for van trailers, I now haul flatbed but keep in mind, equipment for a flatbed trailer isn't cheap, chains, tarps, straps, binders, also the legal knowledge on cargo securement.

Wait - you're a brokerage looking to drive a truck, or hire drivers and purchase a small fleet for them to drive?

You'll have to clarify if that was sarcasm or not.

Yes - because I'm always looking for $800 + to the truck each day - if the load ties up a day, then I had better see that.

250 miles, $4/mile, carriers cut and expenses - voila!

4 bucks a mile is too much on 200-300 miles? Since when you rate per mile on that? It ties your truck up, too much time involved.

Yeah, cause only real truckers have more than 6 axles.
