Those sugar free flavored water you find at wally world are pretty good soda replacements. Chrystal light lemonade and orange are just about spot on for flavor.NavigatorWife and TROOPER to TRUCKER Thank this.

For what it's worth,I've been Type 2 diabetic for 3 years now. I take 1 500 mg of Metformin a day. I eat a low carb diet by keeping every meal and snack under 30 grams of carbohydrate. I try to go or a 30 minute walk every day. My blood sugar is usually around 100 and my H1AC is under 7. My doctor says that my diabetes is very well controlled. I'm 5'8 and around 145 lbs. Used to be around 190. It can be done. It takes work.

As a Type 1 Diabetic with a CDL, my recommendation is to find a good endocrinologist and let him check you out. You can get a waiver for a CDL even if you are T1, I have one, but your blood sugar has to be under control. No sugars below 100 or above 400 while driving, even tho IMO 400 is way to high to be driving. I added the link to my thread on my exemption. Be prepared to wait around 3-6 months to get everything done and approved. And then be ready to make some serious adjustments, one of them being a visit to the doc every 3 months. If you miss, even once, or are 2 weeks late, you'll lose your CDL. BUT, there may be some good news. There are people working on getting rid of the FMCSA diabetic program, as long as you can prove to the doctor that is giving you your physical that your diabetes is under control. Just saw my Endo 2 days ago, he said they are making progress, but he wasnt sure how much or how long it would take. Anyways, good luck!!!

Bottom line: DIABETES IS A B1TCH
We are usually at fault if we have type 2. Being in this profession doesn't help. We sit on it butts most of the day, we rarely (if at all) exercise, and we make very poor food choices.
Walking as little as 30 minutes per day or walking the recommended 10k steps per day will do wonders.
Making smarter choices for food is a life changer and a life saver.
I commend those of you that do exercise regularly. It's not easy, but it definitely takes a degree of commitment.
Truck stops CLAIM they provide alternative, healthier choices, but when you have an all you can eat buffet and throw a freaking Cinabon in your truck stop, you're not exactly promoting healthy eating.
Buy a George Foreman and cook yourself some chicken, get a crock pot and make a pot roast. Cut out soda and sugary energy drinks. Stick to water and black coffee (don't add sugar and creamer. You're just killing the great taste of a good coffee). Stay away from the candy bars and buy fruits and veggies to snack on. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the results in just a few months.
There is no quick fix, but you have to decide if your want to LIVE or DIE younger than you should. It's fixable, it's doable, but ONLY YOU can make that decision.DaddyMojo, Movin On and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
My husband says he feels like a little old lady when he goes to Walmart. He has to look at every label, checking to make sure it doesn't have too much sodium, too many carbs, or too much sugar. He eats most of his meals out of the truck, has two coolers for his stockpile. He does love to get the Flying J pizza though once in a while, usually makes two meals out of it. He does occasionally make an omelet in the microwave or an egg sandwich. He doesn't eat sweets very much, so that isn't hard for him to not use at least.

Thank you all. I don't drink soda anymore after I force myself to stop drinking that crap. It must be hard to eat good on the road but if you have to do that then you must do what you have to be a truck driver. One thing that I would like to know would it be possible to get organic foods on the road?

Stay away from any of the diet drinks that use honey as a sweetner. Arizona Diet Green Tea uses honey and has a warning label not to use if you are diabetic. I didn't think much of it until my Dr said I was pre-diabetic. I switched to unsweetened tea and back to normal in less than a week.

Diabetes is a sign of weight sometimes. I've had some friends that when they lost their weight and ate really healthy was able to get rid of it but it also depends on what kind it is, Diabetes 1 or 2. They didn't want to be on medicine for the rest of their lives and they didn't want to get any diseases with it that you can lose a limb too as you get older. It's not anything that I would want to keep around. I lost my weight and changed my lifestyle and I'm not having those problems because my sugar was getting out of control. So there are things that you can do, check out my e-book, whyyourdoctorwasnttaught.com This will explain a lot to you. Hope it helps. Cathy
