Ok - that's helping. Ground the mount - or the bolts that hold the mount - to frame or direct to battery, and what guage cable do you use?

Actually - sorry guys, I appreciate the input - since I posted this I've been flat out, but I'll be back - need to sort my radio situation out in this old plastic fantastic.

Same guy you had good results with before. Not in Amarillo anymore though.

Blair....Your not looking for an electrial ground....Better term is called bonding..Basically it putting small amounts of metal together with one another to help simulate a larger piece..
rabbiporkchop and mike5511 Thank this. -
Use as short as possible wide braded straps not normal electrical wire..Stay under 12" if possible..

Go with an old Navy ground. Large jug half full of salt then fill with water. Not iodized salt sea salt works good.
-
Water n salt for ground..Never ever see or did ever hear of that.
-
Perhaps you can explain what to do with the jug of salt water.
-
Shouldn't have brought it up but I did. For mobile installs if you want you can use it for extra grounding. Most of the people who would remember this are dead or dying off. Was a trick taught to me by and old sailor. Long since gone now.

Ive never heard that theory for mobile operation, only base. Not trying to dispute your friends claim...
It is possible to inhance ground conductivity with a base antenna with salt, but it has been said that it would take so much (like tons), over such a large area, (over 100's of yards), to make any noticable difference.
That said, my co. has a dock along the Oh river that stores road salt, hundreds of thousands of tons of the stuff, over a fairly large area. I can report no noticable difference in signal in my truck mobile. A base setup may show different results though.
