If you live in CA and have a CA CDL it is easy. I did my TWIC first, $125.25, waited until I received the Card In-Transit status by checking the status online. I then applied for my HME, $67.00. I did not have to visit an office for the HME, just completed the online application and paid the $67 online. TSA will send the information directly to CA DMV and they will add the info to your CDL. I just went through the process in December for both.

If you did the HazMat first you could have gotten the reduced Rate for TWIC.
To be eligible for the reduced rate you must present a valid driver license with a hazardous materials endorsement, or a Free and Secure Trade card. Please note, if you select the reduced rate, your new TWIC card will be valid for five years from the chosen document’s issuance date. -
Normally the HME is $86.50 for a new applicant, if you have your TWIC already it is reduced to $67.00 and both are valid for 5 years from issue date.Mark Kling Thanks this.

So you sent in the app and then took the test at the DMV? I may end up there tomorrow so I'll find out for sure.

My hazmat/license expires in March, my TWIC in June. I need my Hazmat before I renew the TWIC obviously and should receive the discount rates.
My question is can I test the test at the DMV before I go to get my fingerprints done?Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
TSA will send the approval to DMV. I went to TSA first, then after approval went to DMV and took the HazMat test. DMV already had the result so I had the HazMat Endorsement same day. If you test first, DMV will tell you they will put the endorsement in pending TSA Clearance and will mail you an endorsement sticker later. DMV being a Gov't entity, I don't trust them to email anything to me.

I've gotta get my new hard copy CDL as well...

Keep this number handy, 916 657 5771, option 5, that is the DMV Commercial Licensing Section. If you don't get your new hardcopy license, call them, they can look at your license and tell you when it was mailed, or if there was a snag. You can also call that number if you get your DOT Medical Renewed and want to know if they have it yet, or you can call, and ask for their fax number and fax in the long form, save yourself a trip to the DMV Office.
Air Cooled Thanks this. -
Yes. Go to DMV first before the expired date. Take the test and they will give you 90 days to complete TSA. Like said before, do the pre app online and make the appointment. In and out. If you had the HAZMAT before, it should take less then four weeks once you have completed what is required. Been there done that. And I also don't have any use for my HAZMAT, but take it as a challenge for myself.UsualSuspect and Air Cooled Thank this.
