I guess I just don't get it, I find a company wanting Owner Operators but they say I have to lease my truck to them and put there name on the door. Then they will pay me $1.05 per mile plus fuel surcharge ,really! I don't understand the advantage to me to do this why don't they just pay me like a broker and take their cut that's the way the company I haul for now does. This is my second year as Owner Operator so maybe I'm missing something here.

They probably average close to $2/mile and give you $1.05. I wouldn't do it.
If they're paying you fixed per mile then they're more inclined to give you shorter runs with less miles

Sounds like you chose the wrong company. Find a percentage company that has direct customers or buy a trailer and go on your own.

Forgot to mention. Only work for carriers who will email you a rate confirmation for EVERY LOAD without you having to ask. If they don't show you the rate then it's 100% they're ripping you off. It might seem like a good deal to get $1000 for 300 miles, but carrier could get $1200 and keep an extra $200 for themselves

Wait! Did someone say go lease onto F2F after how they screwed their drivers last year? Did someone kill Big Bad Bill and I missed it?

I do haul for two companies they keep me real busy about 9 months of the year one pays $1.40 mile both ways plus fuel surcharge and a few extras the other pays 82% of the load.I have rented a dry van and try to find work off the loadboard.I like staying local or at least regional.I would love to just find some customers and haul their freight and I thought using the dry van would help making some contacts and it has.I have just never saw what the advantage of leasing my truck to a company is and on the other side why would a company want to take on the responsibility of my truck.

Because for some it is a BIG PIA to have an authority.

If you understand how the system works, and use it to your advantage, you get paid weekly, you don't have to chase money nor take losses because the broker you picked sucked and when you tried to factor it, the company bounced it back to you because they couldn't collect.

So do these companies then pay your insurance and UCR ,plates and all? I see the adds saying they pay IFTA but I've never had to pay anything after my yearly renewal fee.I just feel I would lose all independence if I didn't like a load then give us our plates back.

There are so many different lease contracts its hard to really lay them all out and say who or what is better.

Some lease on in because they are just starting out and its easier to use said companies fuel card, pull their trailer and have steady work.

Others like me are comfortable with their arrangement. Its safe, almost no office or paper work to deal with. Can be dispatched like a company driver or pick and choose loads yourself.

For example,..yes I give up a percentage of the line haul to my carrier. In return my only expenses are Fuel, botail insurance and tag/registration. Carrier covers everything else including IFTA. I get a settlement every week by direct deposit. No invoicing or chasing money. I get discounts on tires through his national account. I also get mechanical discounts labor/parts if I get work done at a place he has an account with. Only in the Chicagoland area at this point. But I have a good mechanic I use in Fla or I do it myself when ever possible. Not the greatest or best,.. but this is safe and has served me well so far.

Lots of different reasons to lease on.

I do want to eventually cut loose and get my own authority. I am sure I would make more money. Just not sure if I really want to deal with all the paperwork/invoicing etc plus right now I feel safe under my carriers wing. Its the unknown we fear the most.
