Peacocks? Who would have thunked it.
You know, when you're driving 8700 gallons of gas down the road all neatly wrapped up in the form of custom made tanker truck, you, the driver are actually pretty safe from all sorts of road hazards, including cars, pickups, and even animals both big & small. Provided that you're driving smart and defensively. And of course that's the way I always drove. And that was for everybody's safety. Yours truly included. There was no hero in me.
So there I was. The emperor with no clothes. LoI I had no clue. And those peacocks at that citrus farm waited years for me to show up on that fateful day. And show up I did, as did they, and in a really big way. Our closure rate was definitely at a high rate of speed because I never actually saw em coming.
The citrus farm was out in the middle of nowhere. A huge operation sprawling across both sides of the border. And they loved peacocks in large numbers out there because they were like air born watch dogs. Several of them, about ten or so, flew out to greet me on that day emerging from in between two rows of citrus trees as I approached the outskirts of the farm. I was driving a 1977 KW conventional pulling a 9200 gallon 4 compartment cargo tank loaded with 7500 gallons of diesel. I never saw the bird that came crashing through the passenger side windshield of my truck at 60 mph. And as you might expect, the news was all bad. I did manage to get my truck stopped without wrecking it, even though I was blinded by the birds blood & guts. I couldn't see a thing while moving at 60 mph. The thought of that still haunts me to this day. Never before had something so small as a bird done so much harm to my truck, and to me sitting inside of it.
