Can you explain loading suicide please. Also correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't a coil load go something like: 1 crossed in the front and 1 crossed in the back with 1 strap or two chains connecting the tops?

I never heard it called that, but thats what I dun. Just felt safer about it.

So much of flatbed securement is just flat out common sense, some thing that few people have now days. Even up the food chain to the self proclaimed smart ones............ the elected morons running this country into the ground.

For greasy bars or anything like cold rolled steel I would always try to get a couple of choke chains around the whole thing besides my regular chains across the load. I'd also always build a bulkhead right against the front of the steel with my extra 8' dunnage.

Some places that I loaded coils out of will not let you put a chain or strap over their coils. They say that it damages the product, especially when it's a very thin gauge coil.

    Uhh... yeah... about that...

There was one time I got lazy and was hauling... I think it was 2" barstock out of somewhere in OH. This stuff was heavily oiled. The loader asked me if I wanted to build a bulkhead and I said, "No, it should ride just fine", which it did, right up to the point some idiot decided to slam on his brakes in front of me. I, of course, followed suit and felt a thump at the back of the cab. I instantly knew what had happened. I knew what happened because I knew better than to ever leave that facility without building a bulkhead in front of that stuff. Anyhow, long story short, after a wrecker visit to winch the stuff back onto the trailer, I made it the 20 miles (yes, that's all the further away I was) to our yard in Gary, IN, where I used our forklift to straighten up the load and humbly mosey on to California with it.

Maybe someday I'll post a pic or two of that particular incident... maybe.

I always hated coils and I've hauled a lot of them. Just never felt safe with them and was super cautious whenever they were on my trailer.

Come on and post a pic.. haha I've shared enough bonehead stories to make everyone think I were a JB student reject.. (no offence JB guys). And then the pictures of me driving the steer wheel off the little 379.. Haha I swallowed my pride with this stuff long ago. Now I just learn new stuff everyday and if something goes wrong its just part of the learning process. The day I say I've learned it all will be the day I start all my stories with "This ain't no ****" :biggrin_25525:
