Assuming we're still talking about outward facing cameras, the truck owner (carrier) is just as entitled to want a dash cam in the truck as the company driver who may want their own. And in fact, has more reason to want this technology since THEY (not the driver) are the ones who will potentially pay out millions in settlement or court award scenario.

I just don't see what the big deal is. Yes. They can be used to cull unsafe drivers who continually tailgate and brake hard. Should this NOT be the case? They (the company) trust you about as far as you trust them. But it's really not so much a matter of distrust as it is a matter of self-preservation in today's reality.

Inward facing cameras is an entirely different discussion.

 

And again, the only people who have a problem with driver facing cameras are the ones that are doing things they shouldn't while driving. As far as standing up to them, how about doing your job? This is the only company I have ever worked for that doesn't bother you. They let you do your job and you will never hear from them unless it's important. When it comes to truck driving, that shows me more trust from them than anything else they do. If I had a truck company, I would do exactly the same because I am not going to lose my ### over some douche bag that is too into themselves and not do the job they are payed to do. I would rather be paid well and drive nice well maintained equipment and have a camera than cruise around in some rag because I'm scared of big brother.

 

I think i unintentionally triggered the camera this morning.....jumping onto I-64 east from us 61,,,, had to get into the right lane and had some bozo in a mustang decide he wanted to get by me first right as I through the signal on and checked the mirror, and just as I was about to get over he goes by the right side in a hurry... I quickly got back into the center of my lane and blasted the air horn to let the idiot know I was there as he whipped by, obviously paying more attention to his phone then any horn. I guess I'll know if they call or message me tomorrow it might be something that gets passed along to safety. The

 

I have zero accidents, passed three inspections, no Csa points, and no movie my violations, I have a problem with cameras because there's no need for them. It's invasion of privacy. And it proves nothing. you sound like someone who would let a company push you around. You don't realize one step forward is really ten steps forward for a company. The more you let them do, the more they take advantage of. Why do you think driverless trucks are coming faster and faster? People like you who don't stand up against stuff.

Driver facing cams get drivers fired for violations of federal laws and company policies all the time. But more importantly they greatly deter unwanted and unlawful driver activities (which is their intent mostly).

The point is, they prove all the time following crashes. They prove the driver was distracted and unprofessional. Or, they prove the driver was fully attentive and driving professionally. Not sure how you can claim they prove nothing. They prove very well and unquestionably.

Don't get me wrong. I'll draw the line at driver facing cams. Not because I like to text or surf and drive, but because I may only have 1 hand on the wheel for more than 1 minute, or I may not always sit with proper posture, and I'm not going to deal with desk nannies doing spot checks and telling me how to drive.

I suspect you said the same things when eLogs were being rolled out. Yet there you are running on eLogs.

 

Nope I've been on elogs since I first started. I don't agree they should be forced, but I like not having to keep track of my little logs so to speak. I just think if your gonna hire "professional drivers" you don't need a camera to spy on us. Otherwise you would've weeded us out in orientation. If cars don't need them to prove points, neither do we.

If we were all "professional", there would not be dozens of trucker caused major crashes and deaths all across the nation every week. We can argue the vetting, hiring and training of drivers is severely flawed but until this is improved, there are going to be 10% questionable drivers out here. Driving both cars and trucks. But the trucking industry is worth billions collectively so they have the bigger target on their back and so they have the most incentive to try and protect themselves by whatever technological advances become available.

 

I agree about the professional part. That's too strong of a word to put on anyone. Professional seems perfect. We all make mistakes.

 

This is why drivers are so underpaid. These attitudes. Rolled over decades ago, and still are
