Thanks for all the help everyone. i really was kinda busy ;)

Looking at the link, it appears i'm generally ok. i guess my concern all along is/was if there was a situation as listed directly above, by Uncle Don, where an officer might ask, " Is there anything in your pockets i need to be concerned about?" etc., what would be the best way to proceed with that?

i have to go thru numerous checkpoints frequently, where we have to put all our belongs in a pan and then we have to walk thru a detector, and there's never been a problem.

This is the cutter i use:

i'm glad you brought this up because, while according to my state's laws, i'm generally ok. HOWEVER, my state laws also state that, "A person may not possess a knife on public school property." We frequently deliver Lakeshore (furniture) and paper to schools and school personal have frequently seen me use the tool and no school personel has ever had a problem with it. But technically it appears that it is illegal to have it on school grounds. Even if i leave it in the truck.

i live in one of those small, crowded eastern states.

You should probably specifically call up the Superintendent of the school district you are in the most frequently, and specifically ask about exemptions for workers to use knives on school grounds. See if there is something in writing you can get.

I know I used to work on school grounds a lot, (building new libraries, or doing major renovations) and often we would still be there after school started, and sometimes having to be going where there were kids, and we all had knives of one sort or other, so there has to be a some loophole or special permission or something.

Better ask so you know what the specifics are before some parent or teacher sees it and screams and calls the cops lol

I am sure most people on here will agree with me. "Don't ask don't tell" policy is pretty common. Your day to day operation is not inside the school. You are just an outside contractor that happens to swing by for 20-40 minutes a day. Drop your freight and move on to the next.

Even the gate guards would agree. As long as you don't stab a kid on the way out, you are just cutting tape and shrink wrap.

Let's think logically about this. Is there a kitchen in the school? If there is, they must use knives in their work. Is there a shop class in the school? They most likely have some kind of knives there, AND most likely allow the students to use them, (hopefully under supervision.)
OTOH, there are few places in America, where you are less likely to find logic being used. Than in schools, (K thru University doctorate courses.)

Yeah. Most people that see us with knives know that we use it as a tool and not a weapon. It's one of those necessities that come with the job. I personally don't care one since all my knives are high end and I am scared of losing one.

The way things are today, The teachers are the monsters, from kidnapping to rape. although the females are generally hot wouldnt mind it. Deleivered random crap at schools like any of you. Most don't give a crap what tools you use, wear a uniform and follow the policies ( don't be a richard head )

Also, The Grounds/ Maintenance/ Janitorial are usually cool as a cucumber anyway.Having a personality goes a long way and policies are non existent.

Some places keep the kitchen knives under lock and key, and would never dream of exposing delicate children to sharp objects, even if that means limiting crafts, and everybody is getting rid of shop anyway... *sigh

I think it's less about protecting delicate children and more about avoiding being murdered by them. Columbine onward changed a few things.

My view on the original question is that the zero-tolerance no weapons policies are only meant for students. If they wanna hassle a delivery driver for having a tool necessary to do his job on him, that's probably a customer I'd rather be banned from anyway.
