I could and I have. I lost a belt pulley once and made it home with the charger and ac running off the gen. The inverter is an xantrex fredom 25. It is an inverter charger and switch. I bought it used off eBay for like $400. It's what a motor home or boat uses.
Best cab air conditioning fur the price?

If you can swing a window unit that is the way to go... they are way more efficient than those setups that use hoses to vent the air. A 5000 but window unit is about the same as an 8000 btu stand up unit. Makes a difference in generator size required. 5000 btu can be run with 2000 watt Honda. 8000 is too much for the 2000 watt Honda.

I agree but I like the benifits of parking, hitting the start button and having cool air. Same in the morning. Hit stop on the remote and leave. ..... well after a pretrip.

That's a fair statement. I think the split units also work a lot more efficiently than the stand up units. Probably has to do with how it radiates heat. I would do a split unit before a semi-permanent window unit if I was going to start cutting holes in my truck.

I can run a 8k btu window unit with my 1800 watt Champion inverter. It handles it fine. The inverters run way quieter and don't use nearly as much gas as a regular generator.
Another option is a Military diesel 3k unit. They are kind of loud but you could run right off your fuel tank. They can be had used with low hrs for less money than a comparable new gas model.
If you use the small portable a/c units, you really need one with two hoses (one for intake and one for exhaust). If you just use the one hose models, all you are doing is sucking air out of the room that you just cooled, very inefficent. The two hose models work as good as any, other than you have to dump the water or rig up a drain for the condensation. -
I'll be going with some sort of split or a two hose portable. I can't bring myself to start hacking holes in the back of the sleeper

This one looks pretty cool, I like the size and 5k BTU is more than enough for a truck. Looks like it's still in production and will start selling next year. If the prices are around the same as the preorder prices they had listed, it should be around $300 or so.

hi,
if you like to use a portable unit you need a 2 hose version or it will suck all the time hot outside air in the cab.
i go back to a 80000btu window unit in the back wall. 3. truck where i mount it on this way and never probs with Level one insp. or the annual.
