Help me in the long run? Really??? How do you know this?
Also, I dont work for the DOT, fmcsa or the government. Im an owner op. that works for a customer and we have an agreement between us on when the load needs to be there. If the load isnt pressing and I don't want to hit it hard and just feel like slacking off.....why the hell do you think I need to manage my time "better"?
What do you think will happen after the ELDs kick in?

I think it ain't going to make much of a difference in the end. Most of you guys are looking at this like, no one is currently on ELD's, when infact, probably more than half of the trucks/companies out there are already on ELDs, so there wont be a difference/effect on more than half of the industry from one day to the next. There is nothing for them to change.
Probably as much as 10% of the trucks on the road are pre ELD year model trucks & wont change/effect them either.
Another 1 or 2 % of the trucks out here are under some sort of ELD exempt status & wont change/effect them.
So, in the end, the only people who aren't already on ELDs, that will need to be by December, are not numbers large enough to cause problems/issues like you guys are discussing. Its not enough to cause a rate change etc.
With only about 20% of the trucks/companies left who will actually need to change to ELD's, that ain't going to have enough impact on the industry to change anything. The 80% of the trucks/companies who are already on ELDs, is what the industry is going to follow.... not the 20% that will change from paper to ELDs in December. Those are the companies that will have to do the changing.... not the industry.
FWIW, I am not looking forward to ELDs... not even a little bit... actually, not even that much, and my situation is going to be very minimally impacted by the system cause I am a local/regional driver within 350 miles each way. Some weeks, I never even go out of town. I'm home most nights & sometimes only work 4 or 5 hrs a day. If I run more than 2000 miles a week, that's a BIG week for me. If I work more than 30 hrs a week or more than 10 hrs on any day... is an uncommon week/day for me.
So, its not the issue of the regulations, its just the change, the mandate, the learning curve... I am ZERO happy about it.
So, I said all of that to make the point. It don't matter what my situation is.... or your situation. Even though I don't like it, it ain't gonna change the industry one i-oda. Nada. None. Ziltz. Whether I like it or whether I want it or not, the industry aint gonna change due to the few people who will be mandated to change by December. You guys have to get out of the mindset that just because there are 50 million trucks on the road today, that 50 million trucks will change all at once in December. The few who will have to change wont affect squat. The 1 million or so that will be forced to make the change, wont affect the industry. If the shippers/receivers don't like your price, they'll just call Swift, Schneider or Werner. There are too many options out there for them to be forced to pay your price because of ELD mandates etc. The three mentioned above have been on ELDs for years, they are already set & the industry is going to follow those type companies.Last edited: Jun 23, 2017

I just keep hearing people say we are gonna be forced to manage our time "better". I think it makes no sense to tell people you dont even know that its gonna help them manage their time as if they want or need help.

Initially your pay will drop by about $100=$150 a week under ELD. Eventually rates will go up and you will realize a net gain of $500 a week with ELD

And you base that on what data?
I didn't lose a dime when I moved over to Elogs several years ago. Not sure why anyone who is logging properly now on paper would see it any different. As for eventual net gain, one will have to determine a number of factors.... how rates may change (no sign that they will due to ELD's alone), carriers increasing driver compensation (they do that occasionally now), etc. Factoring income increases that can be directly attributed to ELD use is problematic at best.
Pay and compensation will go up. It usually does over time. Not sure that ELD's will be the major factor in why they do. Not sure as many people will jump ship over ELD's as some think. We went all thru this back in '92 when the CDL showed up. To hear it back then, the doom of mankind was just around the corner. To hear it also, drivers were threatening to quit over it. When the CDL mandate kicked in, there was hardly a ripple on the water over it. A couple of years from now, probably the same thing with ELD's will be reported. "Nothing to see here, folks. I think busy shippers and receivers will need to start extending their hours and/or opening up on weekends now. And a lot will have drivers taking 10s on their property or right next to it. I just bought a 97 that I'm rebuilding but I'll still have 2 2000+ trucks that I have to deal with.

A prime example of whats wrong with the industry now. A the world revolves around me attitude.
Why should shippers and receivers extend their hours? That's adding a big expense in paying people to be there. Whether it's overtime on current employees or hiring new ones. Its cheaper to just wait on product. Adapt there ordering time to an earlier cut off to prevent running out.bigguns, bzinger and snowman_w900 Thank this. -
Just the other day a guy in day cab ran out of hours sitting next to me waiting to unload at Pepsi factory. When I asked how he is gonna sleep in the small cab, he just said that he will call his dispatcher and he will fix his eld. He said they do it all the time and there is nothing to stress about. And that was not a 1099 company, driver also was a good old American guy wearing his company's uniform. So I don't know, it might be just fixing the eld the same way as paper
