I have four months solo experience on a refrigerated fleet. I'm thinking of trying to get some flatbed experience. For a person who has some driving experience but knows nothing about flatbed, what are the basics I need to know before deciding if I want to make the move?

As someone who started in flatbed, I can tell you right now if you are a company driver the pay is not at all going to be remotely worth the extra work, risk of bodily harm and liability risk.

Worst thing you can say about reefer is that you sometimes have to watch 3 whole movies before they get you loaded/unloaded...

The list of what flatbedders complain about is almost limitless.

Maybe they get a kick out of the fact that they are needlessly working themselves to an early grave for next to no extra compensation.

Couldn't agree more. From tarping in the rain, wind, 100 *F, snow, sleet, eclipse, etc... it does get old quick. There are also days where the weather is clear and you still have to tarp a load despite only going 150 miles up the road. Some shippers might keep you for failed tarp securement/integrity (holes in tarp).

I'm physically fit in the sense of being able to complete more than the minimums for a military PT test, so i'm not lazy.

If you could afford to take a bit of time to find a flatbed outfit and attend an orientation class as a stand in to test out the difficulty of tarping and untarping a load. To get your foot in the door and make this as easy as possible, have your DOT health/physical card ready and ask to sign a waiver that doesn't hold them liable for any injury that might occur in the training environment.

I don't want to seem like I'm killing your vibe that's why I mentioned the above.

If that's the case you're working at the wrong place.
