So today I payed my trucking school (1500) and they gave me 3 packets General knowledge,Air brake test and class a vehicle test study packages. They are just A question and the right answer. They told me come back when you get your permit to start school. I asked if there where a number of hours required to get my cdl and they said it all depended on how fast i learned and if i felt ready after 2 or 3 weeks than thats all i needed. It was a little off for me because every other school i talked too told me i could start attending school right away . And this one was the only one that told me to come back after i got my permit.

If you get a CDL, they did their job... If they help with job placement, that's pretty standard too.

Your company will provide you with training for survival over the road...and then you will still get into pickles that you will need to work out your self... you would have to train for a lifetime to cover all possible things that could happen... and that won't be enough... you will have to think when you start working.

    Good luck

Call the companies you're interested in and ask if they hire graduates from that school.

Yeah, it's important to go somewhere reputable companies hire from. I was clueless about the approved school requirement and was just lucky to have gone to one which is universally approved, for the most part anyway

When you get hired to a company, you'll be spending 4 or five weeks with an on the job trainer. Sometimes called mentor. Pay close attention to everything he says. Somethings might be different than the way they taught you in school. For instance, the school might have taught you to downshift on slowing down and your trainer might want you to skip gears. Or the school said use mirrors only when backing to the side for a dock and he might say Look over your shoulder. Trainers are not always right. God knows some of them are superb drivers but horrible teachers. If you have a difficult trainer try to exercise loyalty. Best of luck.

Agreed make sure the school is reputable, and not some CDL mill that has a reputation that proceeds them. As stated on here they'll teach you the basics, the first day on the job starts the real training. You can back between cones until Jesus comes back, but stickin it between 2 stretched out Pete's where they got their eye on you is where real world experience starts coming into play.

Amen. Cones are great but where the metal meets the meat is different.

You do not get all the training.

In fact a monkey can drive a 18 wheeler. However. School is just to get you past the state test for the CDL. They take the risk of teaching you at least that much.

Your REAL training will begin after you get your CDL. And will potentially continue a life time evolving and improving on what you know, improvising on what you don't know when you really need to.

Surviving your first year or two on the road without being fired, dismissed, quit etc is your biggest challenge, what you don't know may hurt you. And the company that hired you. Which is why companies lean towards those who have at least a few years in and have survived the early years.

Many wanna drive a truck. about half will not make it past the first year. Eventually computer trucks will eliminate humans all together. And the industry will really take off.

The school wants you to have your permit so you can drive with a trainer and not just have to watch. And there is no set number of hours you need behind the wheel before you can test. Once you feel ready you can attempt the test.

Had a little over an 11 hour day. Went to Sanford and pumped off a load of MEK. That was my first experience with the pump and hoses.

The training pace is still great. Did Qualcomm and the usual stuff I've done before. Got to do some paperwork and studied some company policies.

Staying in the Days Inn this week to avoid the 2 hour trip home.
