I have heard about the miracle the 8 split hours stuff but found no body that can explain in common sense.
I would had need it today to help me make my appointment on time but didn't know how to use it or take advantage.
My dispatcher gave me a drop at the windixie grocers warehouse that took 5 hours to unload and that killed all my driving/duty time.
After that appointment I only had about little over 1 hr left on duty and to drive so I just parked the truck and went on SB, sad that I would had to wait 10 hours to drive again.
For the next morning I had to drive 5 hours to my next appointment at 6am which I was going to be late for.
I was thinking if I went on SB for 8 hours, I should had gotten enough driving time back to make it to my 6am appointment and take a break after that.
Everyone told me if I went SB for 8 hrs, I was not going to get any time back. Maybe only the 1hr and change I had to begin with.
But I woke up before the 10 hrs break check the tablet and it had 10 hrs 24 min of on duty and drive time available, so I try to go on duty to run but I got a warning I couldn't make sense of....
So am here with the hope to get some clarification on how these stuff works so next time I could use it to my advantage.

I will try to explain how it works and not be confusing, though it is until you get used to going then. Basically you need a 10 hr break to get any hours back, anything less than 10 does not give anything back to you. They do allow you to break that 10 up into 2 periods, as long as one is at least 8 hours in the sleeper and the other is at least 2 hours in the sleeper or off duty. If you go into violation between those two breaks, it is NOT retroactive. You will still be in violation after the break. It does not matter which one you take first, but only the 8 hr sleeper will pause your 14.
Ok, so if you drove for, let's say 7 hours, to Winn-Dixie, you would have 4 hours left on your 11 and 7 hours on your 14 when you got there. You were there for 5 hours, so you would have 2 hours left on your 14 and still 4 on your 11 when you left. You drive for an hour and park to take your break you are now at 1 hr on your 14 and 3 hrs on your 11. If you were off duty the 5 hrs while at Winn Dixie, then an 8 hr sleeper would reset your 14 from the end of the 2 hr break. Giving you 13 on your 14 and 10 on your 11 because you drove an hour in between. If you were not off duty while at Winn Dixie, the 8 hr sleeper only pauses your clock, so you would still be at 1 hr on your 14 and 3 on your 11 until you take another 2 hr break.
The other option would be to have stayed at Winn Dixie for 3 more hours and log all of that in the sleeper, pausing your clock then, so you would have left with 4 on your 11 and 7 on your 14 still. You could drive a few hours, let's say 3, giving you 1 hr on your 11 and 4 on your 14. then stop and take a 2 hour nap somewhere, resetting your 14 from the end of the 8 hr sleeper. That now gives you 8 hrs on your 11 (you drove 3 already) and 9 hours on your 14 (the 2 hr break doesn't pause the clock).
I know it's still confusing, but it definitely comes in handy. It won't make much of a difference on a long run, but if you do a lot of multi stop loads or a lot of short haul, they can make a huge difference.ChaoSS, BORNAGAIN and gentleroger Thank this. -
The easy way to think of split breaking is we have a 14 hour clock and allowed 11 hours to drive within that time. the 2 hour break comes off the 14 as well as the pretrip and fuel time and any other breaks. If any of that time exceeds 3 hours it starts chipping away at the 11 availability.
So if the driver had 15 minute pretrip and 3 hour break, the drive time would be available, 10:45 see.
If the drive had 15 minute pretrip and 5 hour break the available drive time would be 9:45 see.

Other than the alternative explanation that there must had been a bug on the software for the tablet to be showing any driving time before the 10 hrs reset...
Other than the above you post explained best why could the tablet done what it did...
I will provide more details cause I do a lot of multi stops haul and I need to learn this, am more of a visual so any samples scenario that illustrate the process will be helpful to me.
I started my 10 at 4am
Drove 15min to drop/hook, went off duty while I handle that for about 45 min, then drove 6 hrs to windixie who charged $225 to take over 4 hrs to unload.
Arrived at Windixie 11am and went off duty.
Left winfixie 415pm
Drove empty to my next unhook, went off duty there for 15 min, drove to scale and fuel, off duty there for about 15 min.
Drove to the yard and shut down around 4:45pm as SB with 10 hrs starting 245am, but I woke up at 2am to get ready and realized I had 10:24min available to drive, tried to go On status but got an error that I don't understand so I just stated off and waited for the 10.
How do you make sense of all that...
Being able to start at 12am with 10:24 to drive would had solved all my problems.

When a customer holds us up for like 5 hours burning our 14 then we have to leave the property and do a full 10, effectively the 10 hour break is now 15. This is why so many are against the ELD mandate. With paper logs, one would just make that 5 hour break look like 15 minutes and carry it over to their 10 hour break to increase efficiency.

As you learn the 8/2 split you'll find there are times it can get you out of a jam but there are other times it can't help you much. It NEVER gives you more drive time or less 10 hour break time.
For example: if you drive 10:45 inside of 12 hours then do an 8, you'll only be able to drive 0:15 which may not help you much except in unusual situations where you can only park a few miles away from the shipper or receiver AND you'll be able to immediately do a 2.Last edited: Oct 6, 2017

Yesterday I did an 8 sleeper and started driving around midnite. About 3 hours later really started fading out and did the 2 hour portion. Got up and drove another hour and a half and had to stop again and just lie down a minute. 1:45 later is what the qualcomm said I was stopped for. That butchered up my time pretty bad. Basically you could say I took a 11:45 hour 10 hour break doing it that way. Quite inefficient. Doing an 8 sleeper again now and it should be cleaned up once I start driving again especially after I take that 2 hour break everything will be reset to the proper times.
