Only been driving for just shy of 2 years as a flatbedder, wanting some advice.....
I'm not looking to use them for everything, just flat steel, steel pipe no higher than 3 or 4 feet, and coils, suicide, eye to the sky and shotgun. Tarps plus has them at 6 x 8 and 10 x 12 are what I'm choosing between....
Best steel tarp size???

I used as most F/B do, tarps with 4' drop. So size would be 24' long X 16' wide.
strollinruss Thanks this. -
Just what I was gonna say

Ive got 26'x20' and they work great for every load I needed to haul.
-
I carry 2 26' x 4 ' drop tarps, 2 15' long 4' drop tarps and one coil bag. I also carry 2 24' plastic tarps to go under my tarps if it's going to be wet out.
The 2 15' tarps cover %90 of anything I haul and they are light and roll up small.
If I need to I can cover just about anything with the combination I carry. I have even covered a couple of things calling for 8' drop tarps. Takes lots of bungee though.
All of them fit in one 24x24x60 box on my trailer, easy.cke Thanks this. -
Wow, much bigger than I was expecting. I'm not good with distances in feet so I'm unsure of how a 10 x 12 or 20 x 12 tarp would translate on a 5 foot wide and 1 foot tall and 10 foot long load, just a random example.

I used 4' drop tarps that were 24' long. They we're "just" to short when hauling 6 coils and those large aluminum coils.
Do you use all the deck on your pipe loads? Hauling steel I think a pair of heavy machinery style tarps would be good. Keep them small enough for a steel coil without alot of excess length to deal with. Machinery style had drings an all sides and would be good for coils.
Is 20' long enough to cover a steel coil? I don't remember. -
I can only recall one time for sure hauling steel pipe that had to be tarped to protect against "road grime" during the summer, WTF??? Out of Decatur, AL. Maybe one other, but besides that it's been flat steel and coils.

I've got 2 16'x27' with lumber flap, 2 16'x22' without, and a 16'x16' machine tarp.
If I had to start again I'd go with 1 16'x28' with lumber flap boxed on both ends, 1 16'x28' boxed on both ends, 2 16'x16' machine tarps, and 2 20'x20' machine tarps. That'll give you some flexibility on steel sheets, slitted coils, pipe, and the big slitted coils with the "needs to move a week ago" rates.
60"x60" or bigger coils won't quite fit under anything with a 4' drop, and the same goes for some crated sheets; that's where the 20'x20' machine tarps come in. 20' plate fits neatly under a 16'x28' that a 22' or 24' won't quite cover comfortably.
You can get away with covering anything and everything with 4 16'x26' boxed tarps and a 16'x16' machine tarp, but if all you're doing is steel, having multiple sizes helps keep you from having tons of excess tarp on one end to manage.kylefitzy Thanks this. -
Very nice post.
The company only supply's 24x27 lumber tarps with one flap. I bought a 16x32 with 3 rows all the way around. It covers a lot of what I haul and I can be turned sideways for a 12' drop. Very versatile and with the two lumber tarps I can cover quite a bit of oversize loads.barroll Thanks this.
