My truck is cheap enough that I could sit even with the payment. I think I've taken more time off then I've worked since Thanksgiving. Yes it will be nice once it's paid off but I'm not going to just throw $20k at it to pay it off unless I can get a benefit from it. That was what I was asking about.

As for keeping more of that cash, there is no shortage of tricks. If you have a 2nd interstate transportation worker riding shotgun and doing the occasional spotting while you back/turn, you can double the per diem (offset slightly by payroll taxes on the 2nd salary -- but a spotter need not make much).

One of the more interesting cases I read about was where a husband and wife each bought a home in their own name, and then rented it to the other (a way to claim depreciation on personal residence). Something to maybe keep in mind if you find yourself on a dedicated lane.

You might also try your hand as an Uber driver. Buy yourself a nice new car solely for Uber use, do a couple rides, call it quits, and then chalk up your (tax) loss...

Bigger still: do the same thing with a vacation rental & airBnb.

More complicated: NOL shells. Keep an eye out around town for failing businesses - they can often be purchased for a song despite having prior tax losses which you can carry forward.
