Assuming your talking about Richmond, VA:
Averitt has a yard in Richmond and will hire new grads. They also have local stuff and PODS work. but not sure if they are home daily for PODS. I used to run out of the Portsmouth yard (Hampton roads) before moving, so I know that area pretty well...
Abilene will also hire new grads. I think Wilson even has a yard there still, and they used to hire new also. There is a small recycling place near the Phillip Morris plant that has it's own small fleet and I know they are local stuff only, but not sure of new grad. I know Norfolk would hire a new driver for trash work, that is also something to consider to get your feet wet if Richmond hires new drivers.
Any way you look at it; It doesn't hurt to try and apply... All they can say is no, so you move on. -
Thanks, been applying to Averitt and Abilene for almost a month and so far no response.

I applied to lots of outfits when I was new. several of the big starter outfits turned me down. probly be cause of my um, checkered past lol. finally found one that said come on over here, well give you a job. worked otr for exactly one year and split. Best thing about it was seeing lots of the country I probly never would have seen. Good Luck, youll find something

Delivering for Lowe's wasn't a bad local job, maybe worth looking at. As a class A you will be delivering with a moffet forklift on a flatbed. When they can't keep you busy you do some appliance deliveries in a box truck. I consistently got overtime.
-
Lowes dedicated was fun. get into the rail yard among the railcars and find your flat loaded with all sorts of wood. Some of which is Asian wood at 50000 dollars a inch. To use a hyperbole.
Those go to Lowes stores direct next morning by 7 am usually 200 miles out. Hagerstown Md to Lewes Delaware is a nice little run. A good little daytrip. -
You may want to look into SAIA. I think they hire new drivers. They are LTL, and if I understand, they frequently start drivers working in their warehouses before they even get in a truck. That way you learn their business (and they see your work ethic) before you ever get in one of their trucks.
Any SAIA vets in here want to comment? I know zero about the company, other than that blurb, and even that blurb is suspect. -
Abilene definitely hires new drivers and have no issues at all with older drivers. Get on the NE fleet and you will be home every week. Another NE driver that lived in Richmond used to take his 10hr break at home 2-3 times a week.
R+L down the road in Colonial Heights has had drivers wanted sign out front for all of the nearly 2 years I have driven by that terminal.Farmerbob1 Thanks this.
