So Grandma attempts the gas pedal, loses it in front of you, you rear end her - (blah blah dash cam)

2 questions - How do you feel, and was it a good choice to employ your “Stand your ground” method?

 

Personally, I won't feel bad at all. And why should I? Someone else's poor driving skills is not something that will ever keep me up at night. If grandma, in driving however many years, has not figured out how to drive, she should not have been on the road.
Will I try to mitigate the damages? Sure. But I won't feel bad if someone insists on hitting my truck!

 

And that right there is what separates us who like to keep our trucks clean to those of you who will blame others. Kind of that simple. Just saying.

Professional driver comes with a responsibility - I’d prefer professional drivers embrace it, or leave it.

Here in KY, merging traffic simply thinks they're the third lane and then look surprised when they create a "situation". Me thinks this isn't common just to KY, however.

 

Professionalism also comes with the knowledge that even thought I was doing everything correctly, and someone still hit me, that there is nothing to feel bad about.

Remember we were talking about if one would feel bad if grandma is so poor a driver she comes into someone's lane, losses control of their vehicle, and gets hit because of that.
In that scenario anyone that would feel bad is going to have a nervous breakdown sooner rather than later from worrying about crap they cannot control.

If we are talking about a normal merge, I still hold my lane, but as a professional , I know if I can quickly move over if needed. Or be ready to hit the brakes. Or a number of other "outs" I've already thought about in the normal, professional course of driving.

Holding one's lane is not something that is 100% either. Sometimes it is better to get over, sometimes it's better not to. Just depends on the traffic and the merge length, and a few other factors. But yes, generally I will not move over as I know from previous experience that there is about an 80% chance I'll get left to hang out in the left lane and unable to get back over for miles.

 

That does not make sense to me. It would not be able to see anything.

Ive seen my share of corpses. People already know what they need to do with the traffic situation and if they screwed up and got killed, oh well.

I generally hold my ground in the travel lane. I will make small adjustments in your favor to give you a chance to get on. But you are going to have to kick it up and get in there.

What I really hate is people coming right onto the travel lanes of the interstate either ignoring the half mile long acceleration lane in front of them or coming directly off the shoulder at 3 mph because they don't want flat tires from road damage.

I point to US 67 onto 40 westbound as a tension spot. People want over to the right two lanes to go to Oklahoma and people want the far left to settle before the split coming up for downtown. Its always alot of fun. I specifically recall a ramp from SB 67 to EB 40 that was rated for 45 and did good back in 1992 my first time in LR. It's still there, just overgrown now.
