I currently work for a retail / pharmacy chain as a retail clerk. This month was 11 years for me, (since 4/17/2007).
Back in 2016, over several hundred stores were closed nationwide, causing many thousands of employees to be laid off. Some were able to be transferred to other stores.
I am currently 61, will be 62 this year, (born 10/1/1956). Providing that my company will allow me, along with my health holding up, I am going to do my darnest to stick it out till age 67, another 5 years, possibly age 70 providing that I am able to do so.
I am almost at the earliest Social Security age that I can retire at, which is age 62. If I am forced out sooner than I would like to be, I also have both an IRA and my 401(K) plan to fall back on, in addition to some investments which can also supplement my retirement.
By the GRACE OF GOD, over a good period of time, I was able to set aside both a years worth of take home pay, along with a years worth of rent, to hold me over should unemployment hit me.
Also, by the GRACE OF GOD, I have a 2006 Mazda-3 car with 94,000 miles that is in good running condition, that is fully paid off. I have had that car for 11 years, since 2007. I bought it at 17,400 miles. I HOPE to keep that car for as long as possible.
Retail chains are holding onto dear life due to incredible competition from both other retail chains and Amazon.
WALMART is in this same category. Many Walmart employees's jobs are at risk due to economic forces beyond their control. This would also include the Walmart truck drivers along with the other employees. A lot of really good people work for Walmart.
Having been through 2 spells of unemployment myself, (11 months and 7 months respectively), I would NEVER in a million years wish it on anybody.
I myself never married and never had any children. SADLY & UNFORTUNATELY, both of my parents passed away long ago. I no longer have parental eldercare responsibilities.
HOWEVER, I truly & genuinely do feel for people who have both children and spouses to take care of, along with many people who are also taking care of aging parents or other aging relatives.

Any employee, regardless of "position" or "seniority", can be laid off or terminated at any time. There is no "safe" job.
