Moving on from the talk of policies, my husband has been a Schneider employee for a little over 2 weekish now.
When he signed on it was for a local rail gig, which apparently someone else was chosen for. His friend told him about a costco account that ran only texas. When he inquired about it he was told he'd be put on the waiting list just as soon as he finished orientation and they said he was #2 on the waiting list when he did finish orientation.
He was told he'd be home most nights and weekends. He was supposed to be being kept close to home, but they threw him on one way division which is 48 states. His friend has seen 5 people quit the costco account, or be fired for late loads since my husband started.
My husband put in for hometime for this weekend, his truck broke down Wednesday in VA. After picking up the home load. His truck is still broken down in VA. It was finally fixed this morning but team came by and picked up his home load today, now he is sitting there with his truck waiting for a load in VA.
We got his paycheck friday; which showed .34 cpm. He made 402 dollars.
The earliest my husband will be home now is Tuesday-Wednesday if he gets a load by 6 PM today straight to Dallas.
My husband is fed up with Schneider. He will have made approximantly 120.00 for this week. If they pay layover. He has decided to start looking for another job.
Schneider, and the post I never thought I'd make

I don't blame you our your husband for being upset with the situation.
One thing to remember about the Costco dedicated. Your friend may have seen the drivers get fired, but is there enough freight for Schneider to justify another driver on that account.
The truck breakdown is a bad area for Schneider. The equipment is abused by rookie drivers and then gets passed on to someone else that has to deal with the future problems.
I wish you guys luck in whatever you choose to do, but if it were me I would have a face to face with my DBL or dispatcher (whichever you want to call them) and try to ride it out a couple more weeks or months. There really aren't any companies that are keeping the drivers moving in any of the trucking segments. Yes I am staying as busy as I want, but then again I get pissy if I do over 2000 miles a week. -
First, just because you sign up for a position, that does not mean the clouds parted and the hand of God has come down to give you that position. It means...you signed on for a position. In my case, it took me 4-5 weeks from the time I got the ball rolling with SNI, to go through training, OTR training, testing, license stuff...etc before I was back home steady and doing my route. Just like any other company, they have the right to fill in that spot before you get there. In my case...due to circumstances I won't write about here (never know where the spies are, lol)...there was a chance that my position would be taken away and Id be assigned to another ded route on the other side of the state. Turned out, that didnt happen and Im still here.
Costco and SNI also have a contract for loads...they are a big customer for them....on time deliveries affect the contract. If its anything like our route...Schneider Logistics set up the account and times needed. I don't know how people can get fired, unless they are royally late for no reason. The ONLY times I have been late have been when I got my loads late, or due to the weather. But heck...even if I started an hour or so late...I was easily caught up by the end of the route.
And seriously...getting home 3-4 days later than what he asked for ...thats not too bad at all. Considering he has been with them for 2 weeks and already put in time for home time when the average driver is out for 3-4 weeks at a time before coming home..... -
He was told he would be home most nights and weekends on the COSTCO account. He was told he was going to get .38 CPM He was told they would keep him close to home because it was clearly stated, and I was in the room at the time, he had absolutely no interest in OTR with Schneider. Schneider's recruiter said that they could keep him close to home he would not have to go OTR. We had better gigs then Schneider's .38 CPM the only reason he did go was because he wanted to be home more so I could have a chance to raise my son.
It died in the parking lot of the truck stop that wound up fixing it. It took Schneider 1 1/2 days to get someone out there to LOOK at the truck.
He is asking for home time so he can leave the company, he won't tell me everything that made the decision but he has decided he is doing worse with Schneider before he breakdown then we can afford to be doing. 400 for a weeks worth of driving OTR is ridiculous. The breakdown is the 3rd break down on this rig in the 2 weeks he has had it.
So lets look at it this way shall we, this is what I know:
In 2 1/2 weeks he has run 4200 miles. That is 2100 miles a week. 2100 x .34 = 714 dollars in 2 weeks. We need 600 a week min from him to make the bills.
I realize trucking is slow right now, but it is still not possible to make ends meet on this amount of pay vs miles. Its simply not. In fact I know people who make more money at McDonald on a 40 hour schedule. We are already behind on bills. Strike #1
His truck has broken down 3 times, the first time was hours after getting assigned his first load. Second time was in Kansas City. Third time in VA.
This is annoying but a part of trucking, but 3 times in 2 weeks is starting to look like a regularly scheduled event and not just a fluke.
He is not getting answers to his questions regarding the account he was trying to get on.
When he was being recruited answers were forth coming, now that he is hired answers are like prying teeth. No one wants to be treated like this, especially a 10 year experienced driver with a clean MVR. Strike #2
He is going to be 5 days late for home time min. He was supposed to be home Friday. His load is taken, he is now without a load on the weekend.
Now I am as good a realist as anyone but the stats are bad here. My husband is frustrated. He runs the risk of losing the house we are already 2 1/2 months behind on if we play these games too much.
He chose Schneider on the recommendation of a friend, he discussed thoroughly with them what he was looking for and was assured he'd find a place there at Schneider. He was assured Schneider had miles.
We simply cannot afford to be going oh things will get better like we usually would. Its not a matter of simple impatience. We have bills. Most of them are late. I cannot pay them by myself because they ARE LATE, we owe too much to be pulling 400 a week when it cost 100 a week for him to live out on the road.doubledragon5 Thanks this. -
Oh and for the record I am bias on the hometime issue, because this exact scenrio played out at Werner, you know hated horrible werner enterprises.
We were due home, late already by 2 days, truck broke down, they towed it to omaha yard, truck was going to take 4-6 days min to get back on road. Werner took truck, rented us a car to get home to our hometime in NJ to visit son, and assigned us a new truck when we got there out of the allentown yard.
So... maybe I am expecting too much from Schneider, but 3 breakdowns one for over 5+ days making someone late for hometime... dunno same scenerio... different outcomes. -
Maybe your hubby should go to the office with his paperwork that states what he should be paid and what he is supposed to be doing. Tell them if they can't stick to the deal then he's gonna quite!
Atleast give them the option and see what happens. Most likely he's gonna be without a job, but if any other company asks about it he can say he tried to make it work.pullingtrucker Thanks this. -
I'm confused, did he run 2100 miles in 2 1/2 weeks or 4200?
4200 miles divided by 2.5 weeks is 1680 miles per week. -
Irocubabe I would strongly suggest he stick it out and try to get on that Costco account. Just like any dedicated, it isn't going to be around forever but enjoy it while you can. I have two friends on it. Costco is near Mountain Creek and I-20. Long days, home every night, and a five day work week. Better money than he will see in system but from what I can gather, one screw up, and rightly so, they will relieve you from the account.
I workled for Schneider for 5 years out of Dallas and really had no major complaints. I only quit because two weeks out wasn't happening for me anymore so I found a regional job. BUT that was about two years ago and I know times have changed but I think your husband is going to get the same results at just about any mega carrier he works for. -
I called on the road with an air leak...was told it probably wasnt anything major and to limp it home. About an hour or so later...I get a phone call back, and I was told which shop to bring it to.
etc etc....
I learned the hard way in the beginning about SEM. They do their best...but they also get swamped. I never send in a Macro on it...I just call. If I don't hear back...I call again. I had an issue with a PM concern on my truck...kept calling again and again...finally called my DBL. Two days later...oil change.
Heck...SEM even told me I would have to find another place to get my tires changed, to which I told them flat out, no. Apparently the PO number was getting to be an issue with the shop...they simply wanted one before they released me, and they dont want to sit on hold for SEM either. So now...I simply tell SEM who to talk to at the tire shop. That person over there tells SEM that he must have a PO, otherwise he wont work on it. Hasnt been an issue since.
What were the breakdowns?
It sounds like many of the probs he has are with his DBL...if I were him..Id get assigned to another board. Find out who the DBL is on the costco account and go right to them. -
Another thing too...I dont know how the costco account runs...if they go all over, OR if he has specific stores he delivers to, etc.
Dedicated usually pays less than OTR would...IF he was able to get consistent miles OTR to compare that with.
I know i don't get paid as much as a regular OTR driver, but then like Ive siad before...Im home daily, two days off a week...etc. I think the top drivers on our account make about 1k a week or so. Before bonuses.
