I know from skinneytrucker that truckers can never agree on the price of free coffee but I am curious about this. I can see how % pay can be an advantage unless you are in a place that has cheap freight. I also see some people that are paid % also have to pay for other things that someone being paid mileage doesnt have to pay. IE..tolls, lumpers, trailer wash outs etc. Also I am wondering if you work with brookers do you have a choice?
% pay or mileage pay, which is better?

Lab work Thanks this. -
It depends on the situation.

Percentage pay where I don't pay for ####. Anytime I havr to pay for something, I get paid back for it as soon as I get to the yard. Percentage pay i make more for what I do. Mileage pay I make more overall but also work harder.

Have to agree with @Petty Cash .
I have a per mile rate, including dead head, that is a bare minimum I need to move any load. That rate goes up depending on circumstances, such as where it's located (Chicago, for example), tarped, oversize, etc. -
All the books that are available in the truck stops are all about religion and improving self awareness but nothing about trucking. Seems like you have to learn by trial and error. Has anyone ever wrote a book covering just the basics?

Percentage pay is the only way to go. Mileage pay will ripp you off especially on shorter runs.

As above. It depends on several factors. Percentage of what? Are you getting proof that you are receiving the agreed on percentage of the load without various items being "skimmed" off the top. That is the biggest drawback to that method of payment.
Mileage eliminates that risk, but lock you into a given predicable rate even if your company is getting more than average rates, like is the case right now.
Bottom line is: Whom do you trust? If you trust the company, and it hauls freight at a variety of rates, some high some low, consider %, In a non forced dispatch environment. Consistent freight lanes and rates consider mileage, if you don't want to shoulder the risk.
There are dozens of ways to write a contract to pay an owner operator. Mileage vs Percentage is one small part of the total equation. -
Hourly pay is the best for company driver. Percentage tends to be the best for an O/O
