I initially got my CDL A through a community college program. 4 months at night 3 days a week I believe it was. When we got in the trucks it a full day Saturday at that point. They discontinued the program which I was surprised with the huge shortage of drivers right now. They did the testing too...as does this place. They're certified by the DMV in my state as a 3rd party tester.

I took a 160hr class recently. First week was all classroom. Then 5 days a week for 3 weeks in a truck with 3 other students. So yeah you get less than an actual week behind the wheel.

When I started the school began on a Saturday. Sat & Sunday classroom. Mon drug test and went to dmv and took tests. Got our permits. Tuesday started driving on a track practicing shifting and also backing up, alley dock serpentine and parallel parking. Wednesday on more on the same plus driving out on the road. Was in Billings Mt so we hit a lot of freeway out of town plus a lot of two lanes. The following week on Wed I took and passed my cdl test. No thrid party tester either. 12 days start to cdl. Started work the next week.

Trucking school is funny anyways.... If anyone thinks they know how to drive after 160 hour course. You know almost nothing. It takes time, many miles, and many years before you really know what your doing. It takes a while just to get comfortable and every time you start driving a different type of truck you become a rookie all over again.
Someone who drives dry van and goes to tanker has allot to learn, I drive tanker if I switched to drive van I would have an adjustment period. Someone who does otr and goes local or visa versa has an adjustment period.EuropeanTrucker, Samuelh and DC818 Thank this. -
I gave numerous guys about 8 hours behind the wheel which was plenty to pass commercial license. They all had experience with straight truck so transition was easy

I see no problem with it. I didn’t spend that much time getting mine. I picked up the book from the DMV and read it one night and took the written tests the next morning. Rented a truck and did the driving test and passed it too. Had less than thirty minutes time behind the wheel before I took the driving test and I think I got a 92.
Getting the license isn’t hard. The question is if you get your license in this manner will certain companies hire you. I think they require some official training certificate. I don’t really know and don’t care as I bought my own truck.
Pretty sure though if you have a CDL and a heartbeat you can get a job driving in the oilfield. -
If you choose to do this, have your CLP (learners permit) in hand for at least 1 week prior to attending. You must have your CLP for 14 days prior to testing, you wouldn't want your skills to diminish while sitting around waiting to test.

Regular 160 hr school breakdown.....1st week, classroom. 2nd week, classroom. 3rd week, hands on, in truck learning (while on school property) 4th week, behind the wheel driving on public roads. However, you are sharing the truck with 3 other students, so you get less than 2 hrs a day driving. Usually, you test at DMV Friday of the 4th week. So, you test out at DMV with 8 hrs behind the wheel and get you CDL and get a job driving a truck with all of 8 hrs experience ! VS. a one week course with one-on-one training and no classroom.

Basically how I did it. A relative taught me how to shift, read the manual, passed written exam, passed driving exam. Done.
