As someone who worked with jet fuel for 15 years, please do not stick a flashlight down into a fuel tank. Especially the old style flashlights. That's a glow plug you're putting down in there. Diesel isn't as dangerous as gas, but it is still flammable as hell and can ruin your day.
If you must see down in your tank keep the light at least 12 inches from the mouth of the tank.Lepton1 and Farmerbob1 Thank this. -
If you actually stick a flashlight in the tank there won’t be much room to see around the light, thus defeating the purpose of trying to see how much fuel is in the tank. I said I couldn’t stick the tank or shine a light in, not stick a light in.Farmerbob1 Thanks this.

Here is a sure fire way to figure how many more miles after light comes on. When light comes on write mileage down when it runs out subtract the number when the light came on from the number where you ran out. Then next time you will know for sure how many miles you got left.

Filaments for incandescent lights certainly do. Electrical discharge sparks do as well, if there is a loose connection.
Think about it, incandescent bulbs show light by heating a filament up until it glows. If you look at where a spark has jumped an electrical gap, the metal of both sides of the gap are frequently blackened and misshapen where the metal has melted.
You might not feel the heat, but it's there. Break that bulb or create a spark when your light is in the wrong place, and very bad things could happen.BrandonCDLdriver and Lepton1 Thank this. -
