Who is the top company to work for?
That depends on everybody's definition of what a top company is and what segment of the industry one wants to be in.
Some are happy living in a truck and pounding the pavement year round. Others wanna be home and enjoy their lives outside the truck. Some prefer tanker work, others flatbed.
I'll say this. I wouldn't, at this stage of my career, take any OTR job that doesn't pay a minimum of $85k a year. But, I would take a local, home daily job for 65-70 (my current gig is home daily, and I'll make around 70 this year. And I'm home to see my kids grow) . Yes, that may sound a bit pretentious. I don't care. My record speaks for itself.
So, what some may view as a top company, others will say is garbage. I have a buddy that works for UPS package, as a feeder driver. Home daily, killer benefits, and makes great money. I wouldn't want his job though. Too much micromanaging over there for my taste. I, on the other hand, make less, and I'm not bothered by the office of the boss. I drive a new truck and trailer. As loong as the job gets done, in a satisfactory fashion, nobody cares. And that to me, is priceless.Lepton1, jon69, archangelic peon and 1 other person Thank this. -
Lepton1 Thanks this.

Walmart on the other hand seems to not have excessive tour length requirements and as such would appeal to many, ASSUMING the rest of the package was there. I contend the rest of the life on the Walmart fleet is lackluster and is why current drivers can't [in good conscious ] recommend them to others, unlike in distant past when being a Walmart driver was considered "the best truck driving job" you could get that did not involve union membership. Those days seem to be gone, and probably aren't coming back, no matter how hard they try and undo their more recent screw ups.
Has Walmart lowered their driver hiring standards? In particular the driving history requirement(s)? If so, this would explain the lowered starting pay tier. But I really don't want to work anywhere that will hire any monkey with a pulse, OR at a place that keeps lowering or changing standards from month to month to try and reach some objective.
I've also heard rumors some store managers are not allowing company fleet drivers to take 10 hour breaks on property. This would be a deal breaker for me if it turned out to be true and I'd quit the first time such an incident happened.
