Greetings all,
After 20 years of driving i have decided to take the plunge as what I'm doing is very lucrative and even more so if i own a truck.
I am looking at a 2013 Pete 587 with the following specs:
Engine Make: PACCAR
Engine Model: MX
Horsepower: 485
Trans Speed: 9 Speed
Trans: FULLER RTLOC-16909A

Sleeper: RAISEDROOF
P/S: Y
A/C: Y
APU: N

Rear Axle: 40,000 LBS
Steer Wheel Type: AL
Rear Wheel Type: AL

Fairings: A
Interior: PLATINUM
Tank Cap: 120
Tank#: 2
Miles: 396,503 ECM: 388,083

What are people's opinions on the truck and it's price? Do dealers have wiggle room to negotiate like on cars?
Even though I've driven a long time never heard of a 9 speed manual transmission. I haul intermodal with loads from 9k to 60k weight in MN, ND, SD, IA, WI. So not much hills but some. Not sure what a 9 speed is worth for having. I was reading it could be converted to a 13 speed but not sure if i should or not.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The 9 will do what you want. I have a 13 and drive it like a 9 on flat terrain. In hilly country it's nice to be able to split gears though.
-
I've only driven a couple of nine's, but it's generally driven like a 13 or 18 without being able to split and performance, to me anyways, was similar to a 10. An RTLOC should be convertable to a 13. I'd personally probably pass based on the MX engine since I prefer Cummins in newer trucks. I have driven a Paccar powered truck, and while it treated me well, they don't have the resale of the same truck with an ISX and a generally less than favorable reputation.
Do you have estimates of what your costs and revenue would be? Does this truck's spec match the work you do and plan to do? -
Ummm.... Says he pulls intermodal and where. Last paragraph.

Yeah, sorry. I re-read and edited. Did leave the question intact though, since spec is important and I'm not familiar with intermodal specs.RustyBolt Thanks this.

Actually I did say what I'm doing. I'm pulling intermodal at the Minneapolis/ Saint Paul Minnesota terminals and drive mostly in Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The truck revenues typically are anywhere from about $4000 per week to $7000 per week Gross in the current truck I'm driving for another owner. I'm currently in a 2006 Volvo that's pretty beat up and fuel has been running typically around $1200 to $1600 per week.

Woops didn't see the edit. Well still answered the question. -
Basically, as I said in my clarification, I'm not particularly familiar with intermodal spec's, but I'd assume it's close to van, with a bit of heavy influence. Do you plan to finance? If so, talk to some finance companies, see how your payments will look. I think you should have a pretty good handle on this with your experience.

Can you live with the fact you will not be king off the hill?
If so......then you will like the truck.
keep up the maintenance and resale value will not effect you as you can run it a long time.
Do get the maintenance history.
