We cannot take advantage of the spot market as you suggest when we have existing contracts with customers. We are locked in to those rates and the only thing that can change is FSC. Now some of them will offer to pay more if a load cannot get moved, but Mercer cannot raise the price on their own. I know of several shippers near me that will readily pay more if the load has to go and trucks are not quickly available.

As far as the CHI area remember there are way too many small companies in that area that keep running for fuel money or to make payroll, they do not operate well run businesses. That is the problem with this industry, low barrier to entry and everyone undermines everyone else, which results in undermining your own operation in the big picture.

Also CHI are has such a high population density there are far more inbound trucks than outbound, supply and demand in action. Just like CA and NJ/NYC area.

I see way too many OD loads at rates I wouldn't take a 2000 lb no tarp load for. I usually am at least 50 cents higher on my rates that what I see these OD loads offered for, but there is always someone that will take a load no matter how cheaply it is offered.

You can but you have to go through an agent to get it and the broker has to be Mercer approved. Other problem is that you can't get on the load boards unless you know someone that has an account and they give you their login info. Mercer will not allow you to use their DOT number to get your own account.

We do have customer freight i understand that but no reason we also can't pull off the normal load boards.. Some of our customer freight is just trash...

There's a perfectly good reason, Mercer protects the agents more than the drivers much like Landstar. That would make agents unhappy if drivers are pulling public board freight instead of their freight.

I think some of these agents should be maybe policed a little more by Mercer....
