I had to have mine moved because of headache rack. I had a cascadia last year and I hooked to a van and caught corner of van had to remove headache rack. If you can get into a UPS lot and explain to them what you are doing then they should let you hook up and see. But as you say get a Mercer van and pull it around lot. Have someone watch for you to see how close it is.

Will you be pulling doubles or a 53' trailer? Big difference in landing gear clearance and if your fifth wheel isn't far enough back for a pup, damage will occur and hooking to a Mercer trailer won't help you there.

A quick fix may be as simple as removing your mud flap hangers.
