Thank you so much for writing all these great details and suggestions. I am going to an open house at HDS next week. Thanks for commenting on their school! I love the idea of purchasing a cup of coffee or a meal (if time permits) to pick a truck drivers brain. Although I can not believe all that I'm learning just from this site. Everyone here is so informative, direct and supportive. Love the idea of getting nails/pedicure while waiting on load. Actually it sounds like a great deal can be tackled while waiting (SLEEP, exercise, shower, return phone calls, pay bills, get nails done, etc.). Thank goodness for gloves. I'm guessing a sturdy set of leather gloves and not rubber maid gloves? Good luck to both you and your husband!

Hard to get nails done while waiting to get loaded. Usually if not always a shipper won’t let you leave and you wouldn’t want to leave a truck sitting on a dock somewhere.

Duh-oh! So drivers are required to stay with their load at all times? Now that's a critical piece of info that is very good to know. Can't 'park it' and Uber on over to a nail salon??? Don't roll your eyes at me folks.

Not if you’re getting unloaded or loaded. If you’re at a grocery wearhouse they are busy and have appointments to stick too. Don’t get me wrong, some places you can park for your break and that’s fine but for the most part they just want to get you in and out. Then it’s off to the next one.

You have to remember also, a company won’t want you constantly leaving their loaded truck and trailer sitting somewhere while you go do your thing. Even the simplest load can end up being worth thousands to hundred thousands of dollars. The way I always looked at it, I’m on the road to work and that’s it. One load to the next. Just wash rinse and repeat the cycle. Save the things like hair and nails for when you are home.

Makes perfect sense. Also, did I see a comment stating that there are no 'women's bathroom/showers' just "showers'? I'm picturing a classic locker room like setting but that can't be right, right?

No every shower is it’s own separate bathroom with full shower and amenities. You have a code to get in each door. The code changes once it’s been cleaned and the next driver buys it

    L84APPT Thanks this.

I guess I'm of the belief, I will drop dead when I get home;). There will be some big adjustments and rude awakenings for this 'displaced homemaker' THAT I am sure of. I better just concentrate on finding a good school and passing my tests for now:).

That’s what I would do. But any sort of dry van or reefer work is really easy running on electronic logs. You have 10 hours a day to rest. It’s not a hard job at all once you have the basic figured out.

HDS cdl school appears to be owned by Digby Southwest. It is the same building as their Tucson terminal. You can read my posts for info if you are considering them. I haven’t heard anything about DHT but theit trucks always seem to be nice.

As far as getting dirty, you will, but mostly just dust and dirt. Score some carharts and work gloves. Most jobs that you will find are not driver unload. Exceptions would be food/beverage gigs like McLane, Gordon Food Service, and some grocery accts like Dollar store dedicated.

Take your boots off in the front of the cab to keep your sleeper clean longer. A cheap 12v car vac at Big lots and some cleaning wipes will help keep your space clean.

As far as the bnb...just stay in the truck and save your money for some nice r&r when you aren’t working.
