It seems like a lot of smaller trucking companies don’t pay as much as the Megas for OTR. What’s your thoughts and experience on this?
Mega companies pay more than others?

From my experience I would say turnover has a lot to do with it. No point in paying a driver 50K+ a year when he's just going to find something else anyway. And also if a lot of smaller carriers are doing what my company did by hiring ANYONE off the street and giving them FREE NO OBLIGATION CDL training then theres no point in paying decent wages.

Not all companies are that way. We have around 165 trucks and start new drivers at .49 cpm.

Nobody is making money at the megas. They may pay a couple cents more per mile on paper, but using that household mover's guide cuts your pay by 10 to 20%.

Some megas pay more than small companies and some small companies pay more than megas .
Also , base cpm or advertised "up to" is not everything . Look at the Heartland drivers getting .50cpm they're lucky if they make $52k per year .
I work for a non mega company getting lower base pay than current Swift drivers and only turn 450 miles a day and I'm still going to make over $90k my first year home everyday two days off per week !Coover and LtlAnonymous Thank this. -
Anytime a company advertises make up to $$$$$/year.
Don't believe you have a shot at coming even close to that.
That inflated number was achieved by Mr soupa twucka who ran 2 long books, stayed awake by doing lines off the steering wheel, never went home, and is unaware that his significant other cleaned out the bank account, house is in foreclosure, and she's running off with her new boyfriend.
But hey dream on.
