This is the same pass, like 2 weeks earlier, when it got nailed the first time.

    But this is solid ice.

The pictures from the tutorial, the ice and snow were so deep, there was no vibration from the chains LOL.

I address the issues by watching weather advisories, and doing my best to avoid putting myself into problems.

It has mostly worked. I have only had to stop and wait out chain requirements once in a bit over 3 years, for a bit over an hour total. I used most of that time to run a manual regen anyway.

No no no. You misunderstand. I just bought the el cheapo pair of chains for eighty three bucks. The ones that are painted gray and look nice until they're used.

Sure. I'll get right on that. Just as soon as my meeting with Trump, Warren Buffett, and Bill Gates concludes.

I broke two cross chains the last time out, and now I'm beginning to wonder what is the life expectancy of chains, until you throw them in the recycle bin, and just start with new ones.

Well if CalTrans has it way with having chain requirements up on wet roads then my guess 50 miles.

I hope you aren't serious. Chains on wet roads is a recipe for chewed up roads in addition to angry drivers.

I'm just spitballing, but in 2017 we bought two sets of cheap chains and one pair of good chains. None in 2018, and we replaced one of those last week due to ripping it up trying to climb over a hump coming out of an iced up dock.

Based on that and the number of times we chained up, for cheap chains, I'm going to say about 150 miles. tops. The mid grade square link chains probably triple that.

There are a few places now across Donner, you can actually see the rebar coming through in the ruts
