I drive because I'm smart enough to actually plan my trips. Sorry there are drivers too lazy to.

I've been out in that area only a handful of times, and it always sucks. If I have to go there, I generally bite the bullet and pay to park at the 49er in Sacramento to take a 10 beforehand so I can go to the Gay Bay and get out in one trip. There is a little place somewhere closer on 80, I think near Vacaville. Once I slept at a Cat dealership in San Leandro (not recommended, check their crime stats), and a couple times I slept at a steel place where we got loads in Antioch, but otherwise I was able to plan it so I didn't have to worry about it. And yeah, a couple of times I had to reschedule to make that work. Better than scrambling for a place to park in what is probably the second or third "least friendly to trucks" place in the country.

Is it the SUV's fault? Sure is. But that doesn't mean you ever have an excuse to take a 10 on the shoulder of one of the busiest highways in the country. That's just stupid, frankly. It's like the trucks I've seen parked on the shoulder in northern New Jersey. Why would you ever do that?

I pass dozens of vehicles on the shoulder every shift. If I ever plow into one it'll be my fault.

While you are correct in the fact a wreck would have happened you are, I think missing something. There is a huge difference in hitting an object made for strength like the back of a trailer vs. hitting an object made to disapate energy like a guard rail.

So while the likelihood of a wreck still happening is high, the likelihood of the 3 people dying is a lot lower.

I replan. I drop to plan B. If that plan fails I make a plan C. If that plan fails I make a plan D. If that plan fails... See where I'm going with this?
Did I have a plan C at the start of the day? Very unlikely. I can however make new plans that don't leave me stranded on the side of the expressway.

Maybe he was on plan E or F or Z? #### glad I don't have to deal with that ####, I'm stopping at point B, unless I'm sick of driving for today before that point and want to stop at some point before.
