I have never driven a nuetered truck, but do at times run 65, cuz I am the one paying for the fuel.
I would rather have a guy cut in when he clears me, in fact as soon as he clears I will flash my lights, so he can let traffic loose if he is holding any back. By flashing light I mean cut them off for a second, don't confuse it by blinding him with my high beams. lol

I can slow down if I want when this occurs, but I always figure he is running faster than me, so no need to slow down.

I have not either. However I have read up on some of the early radars that go under the middle of forward bumper and certain other things back then. I was able in those days to sneak a extra copy of then original to qualcomm from factory, a pretty thick book. In it was everything. Im pretty sure the company did not want drivers to have that particular one. Ha. It helped. By comparison the Caterpiller 936 front end manual book was about 3 and half inches thick on the desk.

Today with this internet Im pretty sure if you can get the exact maker and models off the devices being used as camera, radar etc you can google them and find the manual online everywhere. in it should be the parameters for triggering, say within 20 feet of a car or slowing faster than say 8 mph per second per second or pulling too much braking G's etc.

I had a more basic rule.

    "If I STOP. Can YOU!?"

You would think people can stop. And I have had to force a few very close behind me into some very hard stops faster than I am stopping at times. (One particular Local Police Officer in Akron Oh comes to mind, I would have preferred not to do that to him a thousand times when confronted with a stalled Jimmy with three kids in the back that day in 1995 or so.)

Im finished with this thread. Ive a few parting shots Id like to make, but it's not worth it anymore.

In the last seven years I have driven close to a thousand trucks, the vast majority of which are governed and had a wide array of cattle prods to make sure I was "driving safely". Much of the time I was in an ungoverned truck (my own), and could safely accelerate as necessary to pass or get clear of danger.

I will be blunt, your attitude speaks volumes. It tells us all that you have along ways to go to be able to walk through the doors that say, "Welcome Professional Drivers" without needing to find a side door.

What you haven't told us about the situation in the OP, is whether there was traffic being held up behind the truck that was passing you, whether that trucker slowed from 72 mph on an uphill grade, or anything else. What you DID say is you were "messing" with that driver...and by reference you were "messing" with everyone around you by staying in cruise control.

It DOESN'T matter if I am in a governed truck or an ungoverned truck. If I am being passed by a truck that is overall faster than I can or want to go, I back out of it to facilitate a quick pass. Then I turn off my headlights when I see that driver looking in the rear view mirror, and hang back while that driver gets back over.

That is what is called professional driving. Staying in cruise control to "mess" with another driver is not professional driving.

If you want respect as if you are a professional driver, then start acting like a professional driver.

It’s amazing how interrupting your headlights or thanking them by then flashing your clearance lights can help.

Because most all trucks are governed in the 60 to 70 MPH range it tends to bunch them all up on busy roads. I used to hate driving up I 81 once past the I 78 split. It was always busy and the area is mountainous. Drivers will lug down to 30 MPH or less than get up into the 80s going down. Different trucks have different engines and pulling power and are loaded differently. This can cause a huge mess. It is why drivers need to screw on some patience and if needed slow a bit to allow faster traffic to get around you. It is what professional drivers do. To be honest I always hated having a truck on my left side matched with my speed. after about 2 or 3 minutes of that, I was slowing down.

You can't really use a cruise in these situations. I know it is almost unamerican today, but sometimes as a professional, you should alter your speeds.
