Not much to worry about when they're putting 40+ through orientation every week.

No, it's not. It's like every company that, instead of focusing on retention by pursuing better opportunities, chooses to have low hiring standards, run cheap freight, and turn and burn contractors and drivers.

That is unless you make it into the clubhouse of an agent that has good freight. And don't say that it doesn't happen here, cause I've seen it.

Better opportunities meaning what exactly? Better paying freight? With companies tripping over themselves to underbid the next guy just to get loads how does any company buck that trend and say hey, hire us at top dollar? It is easy to arm chair quarterback and talk about how you'd like it to be. What is the solution? If the answer(s) are so obvious how come this is not being done? This is a very complex situation with a myriad of factors influencing the outcome. Companies have to work with the existing driver pool, that too has a number of reasons why it is in such sad shape. Those of us with 40+ years experience are leaving the industry and those coming in have never been so poorly trained, as well as led to believe this job is something much easier than it is.

Of course it happens. If I'm an agent and I have a few drivers that always do me a good job and I can trust them then that's who I want running my freight if possible.

But this is easy to do. Just talk to the agents and when you run their freight do the best job possible and treat their freight like it's the most important freight in trucking. It's not hard to get in good with the agents. I had 3 that I ran for the most and one of them could be counted on to get me out of a bad area if I got into one.

But it's not supposed to happen here. Supposedly, everyone has an equal opportunity to run freight they are qualified to run. When an agent has loads that they never even put on the board, but instead give those loads to their favorite drivers, nobody else has a chance to haul that freight.

I could understand if a driver had screwed it up previously, an agent not allowing them to run it. Any other reason to deny freight opportunities is uncalled for.

We're not talking about a business relationship between a shipper/broker and an independent o/o. We're all leased onto Mercer, and therefore should all have the same opportunity to pull any Mercer load.
