The average printer costs around $150-200, the 'average' oversized load (running through 4 or 5 states) gets 12-15 pages of permits. Go through more states and get more pages. It might require 6 or 8 trips but the printer *will* pay for itself.

You must've really stocked up on ink. I usually can't find cartridges after the 2nd year.

My company issued me an HP Amp printer. I can connect to it and print with my smart phone. It is an inkjet but has worked fine. I have only had to get replacement cartridges once so far in about 9 months since getting the printer. Granted I only do about 1-2 oversized loads a month so your mileage may vary.

Just an FYI, laser printers depend on a ceramic heating element to fuse the toner to the paper.

I have found out the hard way that rough driving will break that fuser.

So if you want one, I use firm foam to put the printer on to soften the bouncing in the truck.

I've found that HP's hold up the best to vibrations in the truck. As said before, if you're going to drop below freezing ... take the cartridges with you.

I buy at walmart and pay for the replacement insurance. Just got a new printer this week out of it.

I've got cheap $65 ink Epson printer. You can get CISS setup for it to save $$ on ink and then it will cost you pennies per page.

Thermal printers require no ink/toner that needs to be replaced and can dry out in the case of ink; there is minimal power consumption unlike the extremely high initial draw of a laser printer; they are compact, print relatively quickly and the documents are water resistant.

This is the best solution that I have found as well. I experimented with both InkJet and Laser printers for 3 years searching for the most cost effective solution before reaching this conclusion.

I have settled on the Brother PocketJet 762 for printing permits in our heavy haul trucks. I use 100pg rolls of perforated paper. Cost is around 5-10 cents per page depending on the brand/type of thermal paper you're using.

I also use these powdercoated steel cases that hold the paper roll and printer and include mounting points. These are designed for law enforcement applications.
