Most of the guys that get jumped on, it's not because they don't fit our mold. It's because they complain over and over again that they can't make any money at Mercer and it's always Mercers fault. In reality they need their hand held because they can't figure out how to run a one truck operation.

Legitimate complaints about Mercer are acknowledged, but because they have lowered their hiring standards to such a low standard. Some people are just to stupid to work here. They have to think, learn and adapt and that is just beyond some peoples capacity.

    Edit:
Some guys are just not a good fit at Mercer but are smart enough to just move on they know it's not all Mercers fault, just a bad fit. But some will drown blaming Mercer.

I wouldn't say Mercer has intentionally lowered their standards as much as they have had to adapt to the quality of those in the current driver pool.

I just loaded Friday and two new 19xxx trucks were there, shiney new headache racks & chains and binders fresh out of the store. Both trucks needed cosmetic work that would not have been hireable when I signed on 10 years ago. This was at a job site and both had to be told by foreman to put on safety vests and hardhats and worst of all one was told to take off flip-flops and put on steel toes or leave. One spoke broken English and was argumentative with the foreman.

This represents the current state of the driver pool from what I have seen. It also helps shippers justify resistance to increased rates. In some instances we have lost customers because of driver actions like this. I can think of at least two within 100 miles of me.

That's a good point @roshea. If they tried to keep the same standards, orientation would be a couple guys every 6 months.

You really think they'd get that many qualified? You have a more positive outlook than me then!

Maybe they wouldn't need to hire any more than that though?

Really I'm glad Mercer gave me an opportunity to learn open deck after door slamming for 20 years. So yeah I wouldn't have been able to sign onto the "old" Mercer.

There were a couple in my orientation class though, that I wouldn't hire to drive a golf cart. When a "driver" doesn't even know the very basics of trucking, can't be where they're supposed to be when they're supposed to be there, and need someone to tell them every single step to take, they shouldn't be allowed to sign on.

Not at all what I expected from a company with Mercer's reputation.

Finding a New job is like trying on a New shirt or suit, give it 1 or 2 years and if it don't fit go to the next rack.
