The reason is incase someone would be walking by and get hit by the hook. has nothing to do with the product being hauled. Just better to hold the hook end.
Too all you Flatbedders !

I've spent $15 on strap winder at local FL dealer. No need to spend too much on fancy winder.
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Used to see really big signs like that at gypsum products and lumber shippers.

Cheap strap winder is all ya need. If you throw hooks. eventually you, someone, or your load will get damaged(I've thrown allot and I promise it will happen eventually.)As for leaving them on the trailer. That's fine if you have a dedicated trailer but if you drop and hook allot that's not a possibility. Unless you want to end up with everybody else's crap straps and Frozen straps in the winter. As for a Tangled mess never had that problem. Gloves/buy better gloves. If your too lazy and need a drill... You prob shouldn't be flatbedding.

I've been throwing hooks for a very long time and haven't hurt anybody or anything, but I am looking forward to it since you say it will happen. I've also been using a drill for a very long time, so call me lazy.

A quick half spin in the opposite direction while holding the rolled up strap will free them every time.

Something I figured out was that my arms are 6 foot from hand to hand, so when I pull my strap off my which I can pull it 3 or 6 ft at a time. That way I'm not pulling out a whole bunch of excess strap just to roll it back up every time I use them.
Another trick I've been told is to pull your straps out and and put a mark every 4 or 8 ft on them. -
What are u using as drill bit ?andcan i use a cheap drill ?

Chuck the long end of an Allen key in the drill.
