Has the OP not read that JB Hunt was bragging to the ATA that they were going to under cut every small carrier all summer long, even if JB Hunt had to take a loss???

I’m sure their shareholders weren’t impressed.

I sorta doubt it because my company had to drop rates to match, but in order to stay profitable (and keep our parent company happy) we are setting up our trailers to do the same thing Maverick does and backhaul general freight on certain freight lanes. It's been years since this company has hauled general freight.

The difference is that Maverick sends drivers to Owatonna and then they get reloaded at Dewitt, (200m deadhead) or if we get unloaded in Canada we just go to Geneva NY or Carlisle Pa or Carleton Mi. I haven't hauled a coil or lumber or anything flatbed in a long time, (knock on wood).
Sometimes we might deadhead from Owatonna back to Laurinburg or Wichita falls to Church Hill but that is rare, but Moore has your drivers deadheading a lot more, or did before.
Even going to California, Mav used to deadhead us back more but now I seem to get reloaded in Fresno at Vitro glass instead. So instead of a 1400m deadhead its 200 and 1000 loaded to SLC then deadhead 1100 to Wichita falls or less to Spring Hill. -
Maverick never has been a serious contender in the temp controlled biz and 2010 wasnt a good time to expand anything.
RERM Thanks this. -
Some of our Canada runs get sent back to Rossford, OH for a backhaul. And there are select TX runs that are getting coil loads back to the KS area...but only certain drivers who have coil experience are doing them now. We even had once of our drivers load cut stone on our glass racks (not sure if it was granite or marble or ??), but again, only certain drivers get them. They are removing some of the conestoga's and setting up some of our single drops with the double hump removable tarp racks...not sure what they're gonna backhaul with those. I've only seen one loaded, and it was headed to MD.

I always used to see the I5 glass companies (combined, sherman bros) with back hauls. Usually lumber on the uppers or granite/ingots/stone against the A-frames. Surprised that is not the norm where you're at.Bakerman Thanks this.

Kinda wish we would do general freight during the slow time...beats sitting there getting fat(er)bzinger Thanks this.

always thinking of yourself.....lol

Maverick also downsized their recruiting department. Sent three guys back out to trucks. Their own school is doing great so they are not depending on outside schools for students.
